Tax in genereal

Options
Firstly I don't know a great deal about tax etc so I am sorry if I am just wasting peoples time.

I just want to be sure that my tax is correct, I don't want to have paid too little or too much.

My pay changes each month as I work different hours each month usually down to the amount of overtime available.

Also I am aware of the recent £60 rebate that some people got, this does not appear to have happened in my pay, although my tax code did change, I say it does not appear to have happened based on comparing the july pay with the september pay as the july pay has the most similar gross but not knowing much about this I realise there is a high chance I'm just being stupid.

I assume if I have paid too little tax then no £60 rebate is a good thing as it's less I owe but I just want to check things are ok

So here are my pay details.

30th May 08:
Tax Code: 543L / 1
Tax Paid: £153.20
NI Paid: £84.33
Gross Salary: £1219.66
Net Salary: £982.13

27th June 08:
Tax Code: 543L / 1
Tax Paid: £157.00
NI Paid: £86.41
Gross Salary: £1238.58
Net Salary: £995.17

25th July 08:
Tax Code: 543L / 1
Tax Paid: £158.00
NI Paid: £86.98
Gross Salary: £1243.73
Net Salary: £998.75

29th August 08:
Tax Code: 543L / 1
Tax Paid: £237.80
NI Paid: £130.85
Gross Salary: £1642.57
Net Salary: £1273.92

26th September 08:
Tax Code: 603L / 1
Tax Paid: £161.20
NI Paid: £94.23
Gross Salary: £1309.68
Net Salary: £1054.25

Also if I have paid too much or too little what would be the next step?

How would I go about claiming any overpayment?

If I have paid too little, will I be allowed to pay any owed tax over a certain time period or will I have to pay it in one lump sum?

Thank you for any help provided and again I'm sorry if i'm just being stupid and wasting peoples time.

the £60 was not a 'rebate' in the week (or month) when it was given back
to us it was taken from the tax you paid, (not as an additional item)
ie. if you were going to pay 180 tax you would have paid £120 so not really noticable. As far as i can see your tax etc is okay and on track,
Your not being stupid or wasting peoples time, we're all happy to help
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Sorry thats my mistake i copied and pasted the 1st month so that I only had to change the numbers but obviously forgot to change septembers.

This is the correct September month.

from the info you have given then your tax code is incorrect

it should be just 603L and not 603L / 1 (that means month 1 basis and so your tax is not cumulative)

so you are paying a little too much tax

you need to contact the tax office and ask them to change it.

ok thank you, the /1 has always been something that has confused me

Is there any information that I may have left out that would mean the tax code is correct or atleast the amount I am being taxed is correct?

when did you start the job?

the code is an emergency code usually allocated by your employer because you didn't have a P45

The job was started on the 21st of April before that I had been living on inheritance while I studied but that ran out and I took a break from studying and went into full time employment on the 21st of April.

Before that my previous job was just a very short term part time job in 2005

you should have filled in a P46 when you started work

in any event the code in incorrect and you need to speak to the HMRC
