Tax Code Change But No £60 Rebate

Received my hubby's payslip today. Tax code has changed to 622L - we know thats wrong, should be 603L, tax office are sending a new coding notice out - but even so, his tax paid is the same as it always is, give or take a few pence. Can anyone tell me why was there no rebate in the wage??

Thanks

  • Does the payslip say anything to the effect of:

    Non Cumulative

    or

    Week 1 / Month 1

    ?
  • I earn £135 gross each week, get paid weekly, and only had a rebate of £24.60.Is this correct? My coding is now 603L.

Possibly. The last paragraph may apply to you:
The changes mean that employees paid on a monthly basis receive around £60 extra in September followed by an additional £10 a month until the end of the tax year.
For employees paid weekly there is an increase of around £53 in their pay for the week starting 7 September, followed by an extra £2.30 each week for the remainder of the tax year.
For employees who have paid less than £60 tax by the end of August this year, the September increase in pay matches the tax they had paid so far.

Changes to employee Personal Allowance and basic rate tax band in September 2008
  • Thanks for that, but I have paid more than £60 to the end of Aug.Any ideas?

Probably best continue this on your other thread ;)

Can't think why you didn't get the full amount though

Not that I can see. Its two weeks behind (dated 14/9 but was for this weeks wages), is W24.
  • So how did the mistake in the code come about? Was he on 543L and his employer changed it to 622L?

He's been on 562L this tax year. His employers told me that they were told by the tax office just to add 20 to last years tax code to get the new one. Hence why he's now been put on 622 - 602 plus 20

I've spoken to them a few times but I don't think they even know why he's on 622. The tax office didn't tell them to do it.

Somewhere in the past your hubby was awarded an extra £19 tax free allowance, possibly due to the nature of his employment. Some people get that because for example they have to wear a uniform which needs laundered.

When the government announce, in the budget, the increase in the tax free allowance for the following year employers are told to add a specific amount to the code they are already operating from 6th April. It is absolutely none of their business how your code is made up they just add on the budget increase.

If your hubby is no longer entitled to that increase, which would be explained on his PAYE coding notice, it is up to him to tell HMRC so that they can remove it.

Get your hubby to call HMRC and ask them what the extra £19 is for and then he can decide if he is still entitled to it for his current job.
