Ex-employer wants some pension money off me? Confused!!

My ex-employer have wrote to me today and i'm so confused as to what they're talking about! I do remember getting about £60 off them a while after I left, I was there approx. 9 months and I was paying roughly £35 into the pension and I left December 07. Anyway I didn't know what this money was but just thought, ooh some extra money, great! But now it seems they want this money back, it was months ago I got this money, i'd say Jan/Feb. Anyway this is what the letter says, please can somebody tell me what the heck they're going on about and if I do have to pay it back.
"It has been brought to my attention that you were inadvertently refunded the Certified Amount (the amount due to the Inland Revenue in order to reinstate you back in to the State pension scheme for you period of employment with xxx) instead of the Net refund."
Then they go on to say they have enclosed a copy of MY signed refund form but it's not signed or filled in or anything and I certainely haven't ever filled a form like this in. And they're asking for £57.51 from me.
I haven't got £57.51!
Please help!!
Thanks xx

It was clearly a mistake. They should not have given you the money.
What would you do if they were taking money off you? Would you want it back? Of course you would.
So, if you have not got the money, you need to inform them that yes you will pay it back, but I can only afford to pay £x a week/month/whatever

If I understood a bit better what it was all about then I probably woudn't mind but I haven't a clue. Anyway they messed up so they can just get lost for now, got too much on my plate without worrying about this. Thanks for your reply though

You had no problem taking the money though did you? You understood how to do that?they messed up so they can just get lost for now
They did mess up. And I bet someone took a lot of stick for it.
But the fact is, the money is not legally yours. What else you have going on in your life is no concern of theres.
I see you got stung with the XL thing. Lets hope they (or your credit card company, or another travel agent) says "You can get stuffed I have other problems".too much on my plate without worrying about this
Ok, but I predict a post from you in the "Help me" forum asking about a debt, a visit from baliffs, credit black marks if you continue to ignore it.

Many (most?) company pension schemes "opt out" of the state second pension (S2P). This means there is less National Insurance to pay on your salary (or a rebate is paid depending on how the scheme is organised). This saving is then used to subsidise your company pension.
If you leave a company scheme & take the refund of contributions this rebate has to be given back to the tax man to restore your entitlement to the S2P0 -
Id sort it out asap if you can, if you dont have the amount theyre asking for then some to an arangement to pay X amount back over a period of itme0
