I was wondering if anyone knew whether there is any grants/discounts for people on benefits who want to study through distance learning?

I believe yes, through Open University, look on their website and if you can't find it search this board, possibly also student board. Don't know about other DL courses.Signature removed for peace of mind0

This page has advice on OU funding http://www.open.ac.uk/foi/p9_10.shtml, Ive used the OU funding several times and sometimes the rules can be a bit funny regarding qualifying benefits.
You could also apply for a career development loan

hi there im with the open uni and they will pay amaximum of £590 for a part time coure or £880 if you are full time plus if your course requires a computer then they will give you £500 for one plus a £250 grant so it pays to be in education. any other questions you can PM me. hope this helps, they also help with childacare, travel etc etc0

Do they give careers advice? How do you get the £500 for a new computer? What is the £250 grant supposed to cover?0 -
once you qualify for the £250 grant which is just to cover any day to day bits, you will be sent a form for the comp grant but you will only get this if your course specifically requires a computer, yes if you go into your nearest branch they can discuss which course would be best for you and answer any questions, personally i think its great you get to earn a qualification plus get financial help.0

do they help with childcare? Could you please elaborate??0 -
basically most courses will have some sort of tutorials e.g mine are 1 sat per month they will pay for my travel expenses to the tutorial plus childcare from a registered childminder.0
