Win Stephen Fretwell tickets
WE have two pairs of tickets up for grabs to see Stephen Fretwell at Night and Day, as part of the legendary venue's 17th birthday celebrations.
Stephen has come a long way since working the door at Night and Day many years ago.
Perhaps this review of latest LP Man on Roof best sums up his incredible mix of bluesy vocals and delicate guitar parts:
“On 2004's Magpie, S!!!!horpe-born Fretwell sang 'It really don't matter, we're going to New York'. Only thing is, when he did, to record this follow-up, the same things did still matter. Fretwell and his guitar may be fleshed out by a full band and the production of Eli Janney, but his songs remain tales of broken hearts, broken dreams and broken glasses, crafted in hungover regret. 'If I could just draw a line under this way of life,' he sings, wistfully. 'Isn't it funny how you only want what you can't have?' Like Magpie, it's a slow-burner that rewards repeated listens and, on Scar, provides some hope of redemption. - 4/5, The Guardian
