Walk away from job..... with debts

Options
I am currently on a DMP. At my current income/expenditure it should be paid in the next 4-5 years.

My job is starting to really do my head in. If I walk away from my job and get a much lower paid job but with less stress, it may take many years to pay off my debts.

I don't own a home, my car is only worth £500.

If I walked away from my fairly well-paid job, would that go against me in any possible bankruptcy?

I don't want to go bankrupt, I do want to pay my debts off but possibly not at the expense of my health and sanity!

If a job is stressing you out and affecting you mentally (like depression etc) then no-one should ever criticise your decision for leaving something that is making you ill. And it will not go against you in BR especially if you are getting another stressless job and you still have every intention to pay your debts.

The OR would frown upon you walking out on Friday and BRing on the Monday - as you will have done nothing to rectify your situation.

    Thanks for the answer.

Is it the same even if it's not "clinical" depression, not treated or registered with a doctor?

I just need to know what my options are if I can't cope any longer :o

As far as I am aware, an OR does not (perhaps cannot?) ask for medical records. Mild depression is not necessarily treated by medication anyway. If you cannot cope, you cannot cope. You can be stressed and not depressed (and vice versa).

The OR would be more interested at BR stage to see you trying to sort things out for yourself. Sticking or amending a DMP if you left your better job is the sort of thing they want to see. They do not want to see you deliberately making the situation worse for yourself - walking out of a job on purpose with no other job for eg. as you have no means or intention of paying your debts. Its wilful neglect they need to determine really.

Thanks. I have not yet left a job without another one to go to (but it did cross my mind this morning) and just wanted to know whether even having another job that is much lower paid would affect things.

Thanks for the info, it makes sense. At least I know there is another option, if it came to it.

    Hi newlywed

Why don't you go back to your DMP provider and ask them about it? Are they a fee paying or free service? If the latter then they will discuss the implications of bankruptcy and give you advice on how best to proceed.

Keep posting and give up that job if its doing your head in! As I learnt last year after a long period of sickness, you only have one life so don't waste it on things that make you unhappy!

Yeah my DMP is free and with CCCS so if I did actually change jobs then they would be one of my first phone calls ;)

How's about going to your docs and getting time off? That way, if you do need to leave, you can have doctor's notes to back you up.
