The National Theatre has teamed up with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and Kirin Ichiban beer, to offer four weekends of outdoor late night screenings, free of charge.
A contemporary selection of BAFTA nominated and award-winning short films and animation are being projected onto the iconic Lyttelton flytower in one hour slots over the weekend of August 15 and 16.
Hosted by the official beer of BAFTA, Kirin Ichiban, the large open air space will be transformed into a riverside cinema, celebrating some of the world’s best short films with titles such as Heavy Metal Drummer and Antonio’s Breakfast. A selection of contemporary animation also includes The Pierce Sisters and Rabbit.
We’ve teamed up with Kirin Ichiban to offer one lucky winner and 3 friends reserved priority seating, plus free Kirin Ichiban beer on Friday, August 14 or Saturday, August 15. Arrival at 9.00pm, finishing at 10.30pm.
To find out more about the special screenings log onto https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk. All screenings are free and best visible from the Bayliss Terrace on level 2 where deckchair seating will be available on a first-come-first-served basis.
Highlights on the programme include:
J’taime John Wayne (Dir. Toby MacDonald, BAFTA 2001) a stylish and funny take on the French New Wave;
Jojo in the Stars (dir. Marc Craste, BAFTA 2003, 13 mins) love on an alien planet in this animation which references classic silent cinema
Film Noir (Dir. Osbert Parker, BAFTA 2005, 3 mins) + Yours Truly (Dir. Osbert Parker, BAFTA 2008, 4mins) – stunning animation mashup which uses classic film noir images in a vivid reworking to tell new stories. This isn’t officially ‘cleared for screenings because of the images used’ but I wonder if we can get away with it if we don’t announce the line up before hand?
Heavy Metal Drummer (Dirs. Luke Morris and Toby MacDonald, BAFTA 2006), charming Moroccan-set comedy about a teenaged metal fan
