Cheap wheatbags

Options
Please does anyone know where I can get cheap raw wheat grains suitable for filling homemade wheatbags (for those who don't know, these are cotton bags which are filled with grain and then heated in a microwave for 3 or 4 minutes - wonderfully warm in winter and much cosier than a hot water bottle)? Anyone know if other grains such as pearl barley are safe to use, please?

As far as I know, you can use any grain for these, so how about millet from a petfood shop?

Alternatively, coarse oatmeal, (as used for making porriage etc).

Healthfood shops sell all sorts of whole grain, but they are not necessarily very cheap.

I would go to a local arable farmer after harvest and make him (/her) an offer for a bag full of wheat. Even if you pay more than the farmer would get from whoever he sells it too, it would be cheap compared to what you could buy it elsewhere for.

Try phoning a local farm shop and if they cant help they may well be able to put you in touch with someone that can.
  • you can buy the ready done wheat bags at chiltern mills for about £1.50

Many thanks for all the good ideas. A neighbour just happened to be in the health food shop and found wheat at 80p a kilogram. I'm sure it could be bought cheaper elsewhere (especially in bulk) but I thought that really wasn't bad!
