Can someone out there educate me on the different generation and types of I PODS available. My daughter wants one for Christmas and the quoted prices merit a little further investigation...... Incidentally where to get the cheapest I PODS would also help if anyone knows the answer.... many thanks
A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.

I'm not an expert on ipods, but I've done a little research on the web, which I hope will help.
The main 3 current ipod models (Shuffle, Nano, and 4th generation colour Ipod) are listed on the Apple UK website. Ordering from the Apple website has the bonus of free engraving on the nano and ipod - a nice touch.
Superseded ipod models (1st - 4th generation mono ipods, and 1st & 2nd generation mini ipods) - history available here
It's difficult to get much of a discount on the current models. From time to time, Boots.com has offered a combination of discounts and advantage points on ipods, which can reduce the effective price by 25% or so.
Apple offer some refurbished ipods at a discount here - the store is only open online on Wednesdays, 10:00 to 24:00.People are more important than things0 -
The latest iPod in the photo above (on the right) is the 5th generation iPod (it is also known as the Video iPod) and is due to hit the shops sometime this week.
As already posted - most iPods are of similar price due to Apples price fixing.

I don't mean to throw a spanner in the works... but there is also the Mini Ipod, which is no longer listed on the Apple website as it's being phased out and replaced by the Nano.
This is a 6gb/4gb Ipod (middle range storage, more than nano but smaller than Big White), comes in a variety of colours, does NOT have a colour screen (which is brill if you don't think she'll use the photos function) but has a nice feel.
I'm bias as i love my mini ipod, but look in argos boots etc. as the mini is being phased out you might find a decent deal, although this is unlikely until the new year.
The Apple Store does a Student discount, around 8% both in store and online.:A Boots Tart :A0 -
My thirteen year old daughter chose the ipod nano (black, engraved) for her birthday this week. Seems to be the one to have at the moment.Silence is more musical than any song0

Original poster - Thanks for the replies..... the fog is clearing, just a couple of questions for anyone with an I POD.
1. Do I have to sign up to the apple download site to get Mp3's or can I just load my own selection?
2. Do I need to buy a dock or can I transfer with the USB 2 cable?
The new NANO is reported as being sold with limited assessories, but are the bits and pieces necessary to make it function or are they just add ons that I can later get on EBay.... thanks again.A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.0 -
1. you don't need to sign up to itunes to download songs
2. everything you need to connect your ipod to your computer will be included.
The apple website will tell you everything you get and what extras you can get as well.Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.0 -
After a trip to the London Apple store all is crystal clear - The Nano seems to be the way to go. As expected it does just about everything their tiny little hearts desire - and as always the street cred for teenage kids seems to be the biggest overiding factor .........many thanks for the replies.A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.0

Mp3 players are much cheaper and basically do the same thing. Kids are getting too spoilt these days. Then again it's the parents who buy them, my kids would settle for a £40 Mp3 player easily0

I assume your daughter is at school??? use the apple education store - you can get £15 off the normal apple store prices on a 4gb nano -
go to www.apple.com/uk and click on the education link at the top of the page0
