Money from students

Hi all, I know a mate or 2 from work take in foreign students during the summer months.
Where i live, exmouth, devon, we have a lot of students from France and Germany.
They make or can make up to £500 a month, depending how many they take in and for length of time.
I think you need a police check first, and min students is 2 I think for safety reasons.
They stay with you at night, you feed them but are out most of the day, so not a lot to do for them
They will need keys to go out and come back in, but if your home then not a problem

Anyway just a thought if you have a spare room with 2 beds.

We live in Plymouth and have just hosted our first French language students. They come on a two-weekly basis through the language schools here. There's a bit of hassle involved - making packed lunches etc - but overall it was a great way to make money and the two 14 year old boys we got were lovely. Also it really makes you think about how to feed people cheaply cos you don't want your precious fee going on takeaway pizzas etc. We got £75 per student per week (I wondered what rates other people get?) and are planning to host a few more through the summer (and actually they come over all year so we might carry on through the rest of the year) I'd assumed the earnings were tax free - like with the rent a room scheme - but does anyone know if that's the case? Also we dont run a car and the language school paid for the boys bus passes so we didn't even have to pay the cost of transporting them to their college or coach for outings.

  • I have students through the OISE language school and we're paid £14 per day per student. This is to cover all of their meals and to take them to and from college on their 1st day - the rest of the time they are given a bus pass. I also pick them up once a week from their social event. Ours are out every day at college or on trips on a Saturday. They tend to depart on a Saturday and arrive on a Sunday - normally for 2 weeks at a time. They spend the middle Sunday with your family. Normally we end up paying for a cinema visit or trip out, but that's up to you. I really enjoy it.

I had a phone call on Friday asking if I could take students, I had to refuse as it was 2 students & they had to have twin beds & I only have a double bed. They were offering £100 per week per student for a 2 week stay. Usually I'm only offered 1 student at a time.

I put mine (two boys) in a double bed! They didn't seem to mind. Mind you, it was a bit outrageous because the woman organising the whole thing didn't visit our home or vet us in anyway. She just took my word for it that my husband was CRB checked (he's a teacher) and didn't seem bothered about me! £100 quid a week per student is good money by the way..

I've not been inspected any of the times I've had students so I suppose I could have put them in the double bed. TBH I'm not always sure the money is enough as the food I've been asked to provide is expensive. It's the lunch boxes, sandwiches using 4 slices of bread filled with meat or cheese or egg plus salad, savory snack such as pork pie or sausage roll, chocolate biscuit or cake, 2 pieces of fruit, packet of crisps, yogurt, can of drink & bottle of water, new each time, not refilled with tap water, add this to egg or mushrooms on toast, cereal, fruit & then evening meal which must include a dessert & fruit & cheese.

Hiya, i take in foreign students, have had one staying with us for the past six months, same school as yours i think Karen! You get more during the summer months and they are out a lot. The one's i take in, don't require you to make a pack lunch for them so its just breakfast which they get themselves and an evening meal.

I do find it quite restrictive at times, having to make sure you are there for the evening meal, however i think its more the case of the student we have at the moment, as he has some rather disgusting habits and even having been here six months, he would never think to take something out the freezer and stick it in the oven, on nights when we are out and about. However the majority of previous students we have had, have always offered to help around the house and can be trusted on the odd occassion to get their own meal.

It's also a good way of meeting different people and learning about different cultures.

  • We have just said goodbye to our 1st foreign language student, a lovely girl who stayed with us for a month, and are about to welcome our second one this Sunday. It's been a good experience so far, really interesting to learn about a different country and culture & nice to have someone else around to chat etc when hubby is watching sport & our little' un is asleep!

And the added £89 (summer rate, in Southampton, the rest of the year is a fiver less) per week is going into our holiday/'luxuries' account, so we can enjoy learning more about a different hot, sunny country 1st hand ;) Not a bad return from the spare room.

We have elected to take only adult students who can make u their own breakfast in the morning (toast, cereal, yoghurt, fruit etc), get to & from the language school themselves, so all we need to do is an evening meal & weekly laundry. I am just dreading someone really messy, as I work full time so lots of extra housework would not be good!

thats a lot of food for a lunch box!! i usally buy a couple of cooked chickens when they get marked down on a evening, slice all the meat up make in to sarnies and put them in the frezzer.
same with choc mud cakes slice into portions wrap in cling and frezze, that way each morning they take a couple of sarnies slice of cake and whatever fruit they want the food defrosts and is kept cool until lunch time.
i dont usually provide soft drink in lunch boxes only water bottles but never mineral water from the tap every time, i keep a jug of water in the fridge so its nice and cold, and if its really hot fill the bottle half with water and put it in the frezzer over night then fill in morning with cold water to keep it cold a bit longer.

evening meal is whatever we eat and i keep ice cream and ice pops in the frezzer if they want dessert

Hi Pollyanna, I'm glad you think it's a lot too, but it's the list that came with the rest of the paperwork, I'm hoping to fine another source of students, who may be cheaper to feed.
