Reducing the need to vacuum

We've recently moved to a house with wooden floors throughout downstairs and have gone from vacuuming about once a month to needing to do it every day!
I was wondering how to reduce to need to do this so much... would doormats to avoid bringing dirt into the house be a good solution? if so which types are most effective? We just have a carpet type mat at the front door at the moment.
I've tried keeping the front step swept regularly and am making sure I sweep up by hand under our daughters highchair whenever she spills crumbs (or if anything is spilt elsewhere). Any other tips for avoiding getting the vacuum out?

After I had flooring installed I found that I too was cleaning it every day, so now I just have it in the kitchen, (I used to clean the lino in there everyday anyhoo.) But, it does make you think.....All of that would normally be in your carpet - eaugh:eek: ."And crawling on the planet's face,

Horrible thought isn't it! thats why I'm so worried about keeping downstairs clean as I don't want it to all get walked upstairs into the carpets!0

I have wooden floors downstairs although two rooms have carpet and the porches have tiled floors. In our old house we had mostly carpet but still vacuumed most days (two adults, four kids, cats and a dog). In our wooden floored hall I hve two rugs that don't fit inthe washing machine. Every few weeks I haul them up to the bathroom and wash them in the bath. They are filthy every time! The carpets must be just as dirty ...
By the front and back door we have washable doormats, I encourage people to take their shoes off before they get to the hall but it doesn't happen.
OH is big on vaccuming - I do it once a month moving the furniture out and going round the skirting boards. Rest of the time it's just 'traffic areas', one of us does it depending on who is home and least busy. I'm pretty sluttish about keeping things tidy when I'm working but have to have downstairs hoovered every day or two.0 -
I vacuum my carpets every day anyway. I think the one thing you should splash out a lot on is your vacuum cleaner. A Dyson is about the best.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Um ...disagree about the Dyson, we've gone through two of them and now have Miele Cat and Dog which is tons better. Does much better in the Which? and Good Housekeeping tests too. I'm in a minority here - many of my friends love their Dysons.0

oooh should I be feeling really ashamed at admitting to not vacuuming very often in the past? I didn't realise so many people did it daily, don't know where you find the time - it can take us over an hour each time to do it properly.
We've got a Dyson but it's over 5 yrs old so probably not that great any more as there wasn't so much competition with that type of cleaner back then but I really noticed a huge difference in effectiveness when we got it!0 -

I don't do it 'properly' every day. Takes 10 mins to go through two carpeted rooms, wooden floored hall, dining room and kitchen just going over 'bits that show' - in other words where people walk/sit. Twice as long if I move stuff around. Only do it 'properly' moving everything out every month or so although the kitchen floor gets done much more often.0 -
Do you wear your shoes indoors? We don't as we have very light coloured carpets and this has reduced the amount of 'bits' on the floor. I find that the worst place for picking bits up on our feet is the kitchen which is tiled.
I think that you're more aware of bits on a hard floor as they stick into your feet whereas on carpet they sink until you hoover them up.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -

We take shoes off - no chance of forgetting now our toddler has started saying sternly "We don't wear shoes in the house" and shaking her head whenever we have visitors or put our shoes on to go out!
I know what you mean about feeling bits on your feet, it really makes me cringe.0
