The Cheap and Effective Hair Care Thread

:D Hello Ladiez!!!

I have not been on this forum for absolute yonks, so apologies for not being around! Work gets in the way at the moment.

I did have the time to look into a few threads, especially the cheap beauty bargain one and I thought: How about something specifically for hair products and just hair products?

I have very coarse, frizzy, dry, dandrfufy but lovely and curly when tamed hair and I do struggle a bit to find the stuff that would work. I used to use Sunsilk's leave in conditioners but those got discontinued  and when i found the Pantene smooth and sleek I got told I had to drop it as it is full of silicone which clogs up your hair. Hopefully, I have found a French product that does hte trick, the only pain is to get it sent across.

So I was wondering, not just for me, but for everyone, if we could build a reference thread for hair routine for any hair type.

So if I am frizzy/coarse/curly, I would put:

Shampoo
Head & Shoulders for dry hair
Frizz-Free (from any Afro Carribean shop)

Conditioner
Tresemme for Sleek
Tresemme Anti Breakage

Intensive Mask
Aussie's 3 minute miracle Moisture
Aussie's 3 minute miracle Luscious long

Leave in Conditioner
Shea Butter Leave In Root Stimulator (Afro-Carribean Shop)
Dop Creme Nourissante pour Cheveux Frises et Crepus (France only)
Pantene Smooth & Sleek (but make sure you use a clarifying shampoo that is not Pantene to clear the silicone)

So can any other ladies with fine/coarse/limp/afro/frizzy/curly/straight/damaged/coloured or whatever else hair can contirbute?

I have loads of cheap hair conconctions as I refuse to pay loads for these types of products. My hair is normal to thick and dyed, here are some of the things I do/use.
    • Coconut oil or olive oil as an oil treatment, way cheaper than those VO5 thingys
    • Over ripe avocado mixed with conditioner as an intensive mask - this works a treat!
    • Just covering hair with cheapo conditioner and rinsing when hair needs freshening but not washing
    • Add honey to conditioner, stretches it and makes hair softer, you can also do a final rinse with vinegar which softens and does not smell once dry - honest!
    • Use a little bit of oil to smooth flyaways instead of expensive serum
    • Trim split ends with sharp scissors to stretch out trims at hairdressers
    • Sprinkle hair with talc if can't be bothered to wash it and its looking a bit greasy, brush thouroughly after though or it looks like you've gone grey overnight!
    • Mayonnaise makes it a good conditioner, just apply before washing rinse, then shampoo as normal
Hope these tips help, I've probably got more but can't think right now!

Well I love Kerastase products, they are amazing and perform so well, although definitely not very money saving. I get them cheap off the web, but my last batch hadn't arrived in time before my previous conditioner ran out, so I bought the cheapest conditioner I could find in Tesco to tide me over - Tesco Value, 50p. I was so surprised, it performs brilliantly! I have fine, long, highlighted hair with dry ends. Total bargain.

Except I'll probably still stick to Kerastase

Kerastase- I have used it. It made by L'Oreal. I wonder how differnet it is really to their other stuff, or do we just buy into the hype?

Tressemme also has lots of horrible silicone in it I believe-sorry! I am trying to find best, healthiest, effective, cheap way of treated my hair and have been doing it for about six months so far and not getting too far!!
Green and minimal chemicals is the new black- I know a fair old bit about sustainability, specially energy and transport stuff. If I can help- please ask!

Why do people have a problem with silicone? I always use silicone based products to control my hair but thought it was only a problem if you have fine or lank hair and the silicone would add to that. Any answers would be appreciated.

My wonder cheap product is superdrugs wee white tub of coconut oil. It is amazing and controls frizz etc and the best thing is that it only costs about £1

I don't know if it has silicone in it (I'm at work so can't check!) but I love Avon shampoos and conditioners. I buy them when they're on special offer so I pay about £1 per bottle and it is lovely! I have loads of hair and it is frizzy underneath but straight and a bit flyaway on top, very annoying! I use the Straight and Sleek and Intensive Repair on a rotational basis and my hair is now much more manageable and shiny, better than when I was spending 10 times what I spend now! I also use an Avon hair mask which costs £2.50 and again, it is fab. Even my brand snob mother is converted!

Thanks for the tip about the coconut oil ali-t, I will check Superdrug for that!
