This may sound like a fib, but I realised that I have never before bought a melon until yesterday!
Previously I have had it in those cut up fruit salads that cost the earth or at a friends or resteraunt.
So now I have this melon. I am presuming it is ripe??? Or is it like an avacado that you should press to see if it is ripe and it should feel soft?? Or should they feel hard on the outside?
Cheers me dears.

Knock it - if it sounds hollow - its ripe
Some of the smaller ones go SLIGHTLY soft on the outside but if its soft to the touch its gone too far!
What type is it?0 -
Thanks SC. Just looked and it is a Honeydew melon. It only cost a pound from Morrisons. I will cut into it tonight and see what it is like. They say you learn something new every day!:)Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Yummy - honeydew is one of the nicest. I've got two galia in my kitchen at the mo!
If you need tips how to cut it let me know but I don't want to teach granny to cut melons!0 -
I would love to know your tips and I am not a Granny yet! I love the thought of a grandchild but not being called Granny, Nanna, or any of that stuff. How did I get to be so old???:DGrocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I always use a bread knife to cut melon, i find the skin a bit thick to be wholly confident exherting force with a normal knife. I normally just cut it in half to start with.
Then I use a spoon to scrape the seeds and fillaments straight into the bin.
Then turn the melon cut side down (so its steady and wont slip) and cut the half in half again, and then repeat for person-size portions.
I love chanterais (sp?) melons, expensive here, so a holiday treat.

As above - cut in half, scoop out seeds from both sides, then cut each half in half again. Then taking the segment, cut under the flesh in line with the skin so the flesh just sits free but still in the skin segment, then cut into squares - easy to eat then!
Great with an added (glacier?) cherry in the middle! YUM!0
