white fly, green fly and woolly aphids

I'm not sure if this is the right place to go and I've searched and scoured threads but I can't find the answers I'm looking for so here goes.

I'm being over run with aphids which are killing my apple trees amongst everything else they can attach themselves to including sage and lemon balm plants. I'm clearing away all the affected areas but next year, I want to make sure I nip this in the bud (pardon the pun.) OS style.

I've tried the washing up liquid squirting to no avail. I've been told that marigolds keep them at bay and am planning to grow them from seed. I've looked up methods of controlling them but theses are quite pricey so can anyone help me with this please? I'd like to do it cheaply, organically and without harming the ladybirds and useful insects. The big game plan is to encourage the aphid lovers but I don't know what plants and things to do. Also, I know grease bands around the trees will stop the ants climbing up the tree - I know there is a way of doing this OS but can't remember how! Any help much appreciated.

  • When you say you have tried the washing up liquid, did you just use soap and water? If you grab a stockpot, put in it about 2 l of water, a whole garlic bulb minced and a tbs of really hot chilli powder (or a few chopped up hot cjillies with seeds) and boil for 20 minutes, then let it cool, strain, fillinto spray bottle and add washing up liquid- this should do the job. Also, ants hate powder because it sticks to their feet, so sprinkling talcum powder around the base of the affected plants is worth it. Re-apply after rain etc.

  • Thanks! Yes, I've only ever known of a mix of washing up liquid/pure soap and water. I knew ants won't cross a chalk line and never knew why! Simple really when thinking about it ... ho hum!
