Help needed for the Free Food Challenge

I'm not the best at organising my time and energies but when I was married to the ex we used to do loads of foraging and every year ended up with more food than we knew what to do with. I really want to get back to this way of life but am having some problems so I need some suggestions.

DH is a complete townie and is using passive resistance when I want to go walking in the country (plus his new shift work isn't helping.)

Ex takes my DS every weekend and DS has now started cycle club which goes from 10.30 - 12 every saturday morning. That leaves me with DD2 who is 4, now maybe I'm being a bit silly but I'm a bit nervous about just me and her going for trudges through the country together especially after that woman and her two girls were attacked and 2 of them killed :(

All suggestions would be very gratefully recieved and mulled over.

Get yourself into a self defence class for a start.
Then, get yourself an alarm..........you can get really cheap ones now. Even if it doesnt deter the would-be attacker, you can throw it away from you so it can carry on making a noise so a rescuer could find you.....or get a pepper spray kinda thing. Ring your local police station and ask where you can contact someone about personal safety - they can put you in touch with your local crime prevention office, or advise you of your local neighbourhood watch group. (I mention NHW because our watch provide free personal attack alarms and the like to local people ;) )
You could also find a local walking group - I know here in sheffield there are many ramblers groups who advertise in the local paper....and they usually go off on sat/sun.
and ALWAYS let someone know where you are going and for how long, with a set time to 'call in' to let me know you are safe.

I used to take my baby daughter off walking in Derbyshire, and never had any problems. Dont let an extreme situation put you off.....just go prepared and you will be fine.

    have fun

  • I can understand your fears moggins as no doubt sticking to regular used pathways means other people may well have beaten you to getting some nice juicy pickings, so the best places to look are where hardly anyone goes which is a bit risky on your own.

Is there no one else that would go along with you if DH can't manage or doesn't fancy it? And of course it goes without saying that if you do go on your own to make sure someone knows where you are and how long you'll be etc and carry a mobile phone but that's not exactly a deterrant to a would-be attacker. If it helps any, these things don't happen very often so you'll probably be perfectly fine, but there's always that nagging fear of "what if" :(

will come back to you three times as strong!

  • just had another thought, have you asked around local toddler groups to find if there are any other like-minded parents you could join up with? or try your midwife/health visitor if they know of any likeminded parents or groups.

  • ohhh Good luck wuth that Moggins! I can totally understand your fears. I want to do the same as you but as being 'reletivly new' to the area I have no idea where to go.

Maybe an alarm like someone else suggested

Excellent idea! I'd forgotten about those personal alarms but I'd definitely make sure I carried one of those! :)

Edit: Just found one on Ebay for £3.99 and it's small enough to fit on a key-ring so no carrying around extra bulky items :)

dont pay that.......anyone want one for nothing, pm me and i will send you one!!! (I have loads......neighbourhood watch!)
try your local crime prevention office first...........or if you are part of a group - be it toddler group or whatever, you can get them in bulk (around 20) for about £1.50 each from a company such as solon security (you can order on line)

Oh well, I've ordered one now, never mind. I don't mind spending less than a fiver anyway if it will keep us safe and give me some reassurance. Money doesn't really come into it when safety is concerned.
