There is black berries outside in our hedge, I never passed any remarks on them until I started reading this board!! I was wondering should I pick them or are they edible? If they are edible what could I make with them, black berry crumble??

Or blackberry wine! Jam too especially bramble jelly where you cook them and then strain them through a muslin and use the juice to make the jam with sugar.0

If there isn't a lot of pollution along your road there shouldn't be a problem if you give them a rinse before using. I wouldn't pick from alongside a main road with busy traffic.
Generally wild blackberries have a better flavour than shop bought but may have a higher pip content so you may find using them with apples or as a jelly better.

You can cook elderberries in the same way but they have a higher tannin content so you may not like them as much again possibly better sieving the pips out.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Blackberry icecream/sorbet I'm sure is achievable - not that I've tried that one.

If I don't collect enough to do anything with the first time I freeze them on a baking tray to keep them seperate then pour into an old ice cream container. Go every few days and add to them. Then, when you've a decent amount you can use them for the jam or whatever.0

THANKS for responding! Our road is a one car road, there isn't enough traffic to make it a 2 car road as it is only used by the people who live on the road, about 9 houses I think! The berries are in the hedge that do not run along side the road they go in the opposite direction to the road, if that makes sense! The nearest to the road would be about 15 ft.
What is the difference in black berries and elderberries?
Would they be useable if I washed them in boiling water?0 -
Elderberries are small single bobbles of fruit. They look a bit like blackcurrants but they are quite bitter raw.Blackberries are a cluster of bobbles all stuck together and the bushes are thorny whilst elder bushes/trees are not, blackberries are sweetish raw.
I would just wash them in cold water in a sieve .0 -
Blackberry picture here, you have to scroll down a bit though
