Stainless steel saucepans....HOT Handles??

Jummy
I replaced my old saucepans with some stainless steel ones from Tescos yesterday.
They have a stainless steel handle (my old ones had a plastic handle).
I did some milk in the milk pan this morning and burnt my hand on the handle as it was red hot:(
Is this the norm for these type of saucepans?

Poor Jummy
Did the packaging label or instruction leaflet give a warning that the handles will get hot? If not, sue!
Without some form of insulation, the metal handle is bound to get hot......next time wear oven gloves.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
maybe they could insulate the pan to stop the milk getting hot aswell!0

I have metal saucepans, and the handle is a different metal to the rest of the pan. The result...the pan gets hot, but the handle never reaches 'burning' temperature.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

I've had metal pans for years and never had this problem. Try heating up another pan and see if it happens again. I don't mean burn yourself again. Just to see if it is a fault.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

I have now read the instructions on the packaging which do say the handles can become hot.DOH!!
I will now be very careful in future.0 -
Youl can avoid this by adjusting the settings on the gas ring if you are using gas, most people have the gas set too high when using pans, I want it quick so I turn it up full! not necessarily the flame should only just reach the outer edge of the bottom of the pan as any higher flame and the heat simply rides up the outside of the pan and is wasted.
If your using electric take them back, I would I don't care what it says on the box about the handles may get hot, I think it reasonable to expect to be able to pick the pan up without harming myself maybe a little discomfort but certainly no more, any more than if I bought a pot noodle that said slightly spicy on the carton but took two layers of skin off iff I dipped my finger in it!
Why would anyone want a saucepan that you can't pick up unless you have a casualty team on 24hr stand by.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -
I have an electric cooker and my stainless steel pans are fine. I have also used them on an Aga and they were OK there too.
The only time they get hot is when I put the whole pan in the oven to cook a casserole. You then have to be very carefully taking them out as they are very, very hot indeed. It does not sound right that yours are hot.

I've had my stainless steel saucepans for years now and I am used to the fact the handles get hot when you cook, especially on the milk saucepan. You just get used to reaching for the oven glove everytime! However, when I need to buy saucepans again this will be one of the first things I check.
BTW, you can buy these liitle covers from John Lewis that slip on the handle of the pans. I haven't tried them, but they could be the answer or you could make your own!0
