Which is more effective hand or machine wash

There is a reason behind this question.
I took down some material vertical blinds to clean. There had been a smoker in the house. I put one lot in the bath to soak with some washing powder. Left and put in fresh water.
The second lot I decided to put in the washing machine. Don't ask I don't know why.
Anyway the lot I soaked seem to be cleaner then the lot I washed in the machine. I know I did put a bit to much powder in the machine but can't see why that would effect the cleaner process.
Both lots are dry now. Should I put the machine washed ones in to soak in the bath. or shall I just put up with.
Many thanks in advance on any ideas on this one.

The longer the fabric is in contact with the washing powder, the better chance it will have to dissolve the stains and for them to wash out. So quite often soaking will be more effective at stain removal. I would soak and then use the rinse feature on your washing machine to get all the soap powder out. If the blinds are next to each other, you may want to wash the others in the same way, in case they are noticeably more stained than the others. That's what I would do anyway.0
