Growing veg indoors?

This may sound really silly, but is it possible to grow any veg indoors? I live in a flat with no garden, and i don't even have an outside windowsill for a window box. Would it be possible to grow veg in an indoor window box? If so, would i have to adhere to the usual seasonal planting 'rules' - e.g. plant tomatoes in June etc....

I've managed to grow herbs, but I thought it might be possible to grow potatos in a bucket or tomatoes on the window sill or something?

Don't laugh! :D

Thanks yet again!

I am sure it would be possible, you might not get the best results though! If you're interested in growing veg why not consider an allotment.

The problems are I think damp leaking from your containers causing damage and getting enough light. I think you can get special lights, but is it worth it for the electricity?

    Are you sprouting beans yet?

You just need large coffee jars. I used mung beans, you wash and soak overnight the first night, then rinse and drain off. Then every day you rinse once a day. When big enough you use in stir fries, salads etc..

If there aren't allotments, are there any community gardening schemes?

I'm not laughing - I was going to ask the same question myself!!! There aren't any allotments near me so I have dreams of growing my veggies in small pots on windowsills, I thought perhaps a pot of baby tomatoes on the ledge by my french doors might work (I've got one of those silly juliet balcony things). Ayone tried this before?

It's perfectly possible, I've grown peas, tomatoes, herbs, mushrooms and salad leaves indoors since I was a nipper. These books will help:

    Kitchen Harvest - Susan Berry
The Insatiable Gardener's guide - Susan M. Brackney
Window Box Allotment - Penelope Bennett

You could grow Gartenpearl tumbling tomatoes in a hanging basket suspended near your window - you just need to make sure you catch the water below it for watering - you can get baskets with water catchers on the bottom and if you use water gel crystals then it will retain the water for much longer. This way you can get loads of delicious cherry toms in a small space - as long as they get loads of light and tomato food!

I've grown new potatoes indoors - long time ago, but think it was just 1 plant per large (12" ish) plaggy pot. Loads of herbs will grow well on window ledge - I occasionally grow coriander for curries, it's amazing how many of the seeds germinate from the supermarket packets. Only ever grown stuff in the south-facing rooms, anyone tried north-facing.?

My dad always grew tomatoes on our windowsill in the flat we lived in.
A book in our library is 'self sufficiency in a small flat' (or something like that) by Joy.O.I.Sposzynska which is excellent .The author writes from experience.
