I think you have stumped us on this one
Gilt can easily come off if you use too much water/cleaning products. Could you try vacuuming with an upholstery brush and use a soft tooth brush to get into the fiddly bits. I saw on TV once how they use talc to clean very delicate things in stately homes. They sprinkle it on and gently brush in and vac off.
If you can't get it clean you could always give it a good scrubbing with vinegar or something and sod the gilt. If some comes off it might look quite distressed and antiquey/expensive. Proudly show it off and claim it's a family heirloom.
Edit: It's moi, MATH forgot to change the ID ???A woman of many moods...... and chocolate solves them all0 -
given it a bash with talc and hoover last night, but found an excellent solution, got 8 & 13 yr old cleaning fiddly bits with cotton buds last night. they spent 2 hours doing it, but it looks fab, and they aren't up yet. (unlike 3 yr old who is running around naked, shouting for coco pops). ;D0
