What's the deal?
The Sun newspaper's giving 2 energy saving bulbs to anybody that buys this Saturday's edition from selected shops.
How can I get 'em?
Well, it should be as simple as buying a newspaper, but you'll only get the bulbs when you buy it from these shops:
Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, One-Stop, Co-op, BP Connect, WHSmith, Tates, Woolworths, McColl's, Martin's, RS McColl, Somerfield, Supernews, Superdrug, Booths, Budgens, Spar, Costcutter, Londis
Anything else?
The paper apparently has 4.5 million bulbs to give away, so finding a couple shouldn't be a problem. Nonetheless, it's a good idea to go earlier rather than later if possible.
If you're looking to kit out your whole house with energy saving bulbs, Morrisons is offering 4 for £1 on most fittings in-store, making it the cheapest place to buy them by a decent margin.

One of the main problems with most CFL's is the light temperature. Most CFLs in the sheds and shops have a temperature of 2700 which mimics the light of an incandescent bulb, gloomy yellow.
If you want a bright white light, you need to be at least 3500 (Daylight) or above.
Please see link...

These are as rare as hens teeth in the sheds. If you don't like the 2700's, then let the sheds know, and maybe we can get some decent CFL lights at a decent price.

Before you switch, be aware that energy-saving light-bulbs contain mercury. If you break one, you get neurotoxic mercury vapours, which specially affect children. DO NOT try to hoover it up - it just spreads the toxins.
Also, if you bin them, more mercury ends up in the landfills.
Not to mention the gloomy, depressing light they emit.
Think twice.0 -
Not to mention the fact they have been linked to migraines as well..

Oh, and they cant be used with dimmer switches either (although they are already dimmer than the bulbs they are supposed to be the equivalent to)Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
There was a spokesman from the industry a couple of days ago speaking about the mercury.
Let's face it, most adults have mercury amalgam in their teeth, so as long as you don't go licking up the mess I don't see there's an issue.
The spokesman acknowledged the dimness and said that "the way forward is LED".
The interviewer didn't pick up on it, though, which is a shame.0 -

This is not quite true, you CAN get Compact Flourescent Lamps that dim:

This German company sells them via some mail order agents, who can trim a percentage off the admittedly premium price.0 -
mercury amalgam in their teeth? : Some have linked this to Menieres syndrome.. (ringing in the ears, dizziness, and in the worse case vomitting)... Is my use of these light bulbs the cause of my dizzy spells, days off work, and lost income?0

Yeah but they arent likely to be the ones they are giving away with the sun, I was talking about those type of bulbs. I do realise there are some you can use with dimmers but these are mostly too costly for most people to consider as "moneysaving"Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -

Nah, that's just general low grade winter type depression!
Seriously though, I have heard that some people suffer from similar problems caused by the frequency of flickering of fluorescent lights. Try incandesants at home in a main room to see if that helps.
Macdonalds have specially developed lights which flicker at a frequency which is slightly uncomfortable for humans. This stops folk outstaying their welcome and makes room for the next customer.
Best of luck and see the GP to eliminate anything they can think of which could be causing your problem0 -
Morrison's are doing 2 energy saving bulbs for 49p (own brand), various power sizes and connections. For that price it's worth replacing the old style bulbs.0
