What to do with horrible potatoes

Options
Bought a bag of so-called "general purpose" spuds with reddish skins, as they were a bit cheaper than the normal red ones I get for mashing, which make mash with a lovely floury texture (can't remember the name of the variety, sorry).

Anyway they are not very nice - even when I peeled them there were grey bits embedded in the flesh, and when I boiled them they went to gloopy mush. I mashed them anyway, but it tasted nasty, like the texture of wallpaper paste, and about as appetising.

So what can I do with the rest of the bag? Would they microwave whole, like jackets? I expect they might be okay for chips, but I don't have a deep fat fryer, and don't want to use 90 minutes worth of gas to cook them in the oven.

I am very disappointed, and would like to warn other people that these so-called "all purpose" potatoes are not up to much :(. Unless I just got a bad batch, of course.
:D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • Sounds like the frost has got to them (grey bits). Potatoes that are sold in the supermarket can be up to a year old unless it says 'new potatoes' on the bag, (my local potato farmer told me that).

The spuds you bought sound horrible, you could always plant them and grow more horrible potatoes. I think they can make chips but that's about it as far as I know.

Buy your little 'uns a spud gun and let them pretend to kill each other with bits of potato!! (don't let them use it inside tho or you'll be finding bits of potato for months! I know my mum did :rotfl:)

Culpeper - thanks, but they aren't obviously grotty until you actually cut them up, and I think I'd make a bit of a spectacle of myself in the middle of Sainsbury's with my vegetable knife - probably get arrested :o lol.

Megsykins - my only "little 'un" is an elderly tabby cat, and not much given to pistol fights - although pillow fights in the small hours are his main hobby! Husband actually asked me the other day if I could sort out a spare pillow for the cat, to stop him climbing on his (hub's) head  !

I will experiment tomorrow, and make a note never to buy the same again. Incidentally, thanks to Kylecraiggan for the info about the potential age of bagged supermarket spuds - double:eek: .

Oven roast them! Last week I bought some 'Winston' white potatoes. Mashed, they were hard on the outside and soggy inside (urgh), chipped, they were really soggy and greasy, and boiled, they had no taste at all.
So it was either hash or roast. I roasted them with a little olive oil and OH ate the lot!
Sunday I made another 3lb and managed to get three before he again ate them. (they were supposed to go on a salad) They didn't go crispy, but they were very, very good!
Failing that, take them back for a refund.

I just want to say that potatoes you buy *anywhere* can be up to a year old - as they are stored for the purpose.

The alternative is to buy potatoes from abroad, but storage is better than adding 'food miles' from an environmental point of view.

It has always been the case that potatoes have been up to a year old at the point of purchase - even before supermarkets. When my mother was a girl they grew all their own, and had to store them till the following season, using some for seed.

Yep, when I worked in a chippy, we used to get complaints about the chips at certain times of year - we had to point out that it wasn't our fault we had to use older potatoes, it's the seasons!! (example of how frozen food / supermarkets make people forget that most food isn't in season all year round!)
I've found Tesco potatoes to be particularly bad - I've cooked many a jacket to find a black lump in the middle

Bogof_Babe - you could always have spud gun fights with your OH!! *Megsykins drifts off into nostalgia over spud guns, catapults and the like*
  • When I make soup I often add a spud (in sml chunks) to act as a thickener so you could use them up this way bit it will take a while
