I was just wondering where those of you who buy traditionally reared meat get it from – I don’t want to get it from Tesco etc, as I don’t really trust their labels. I want to buy it direct from a farmer or a butcher who knows the farmers, etc. I have tried https://www.bigbarn.co.uk and https://www.ukfoodonline.co.uk but there is no one near me - so I guess I will have to buy over internet.
Do any of you buy meat over internet?
Cost is still an important factor so who is good value for money? Is it cheaper to buy half a lamb/pig at a time or just select cheaper cuts?
NB.
I know organic/free range meat versus value meat has been discussed before and I don’t want to start a discussion about all the pros and cons
– I believe it’s a personal decision – I just want to know the most cost effective way to buy traditionally reared meat.

Your home is at risk if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other loan secured on it.

I'm a veggie but I know people who have used and recommend Well Hung, Welsh Hook (does organic halal and we're not having that conversation either), and these two: http://www.welshfarmorganics.co.uk/ http://www.higherhacknell.co.uk/
Three people at least on Downsizer also sell meat on a smaller scale, but generally you have to book in advance because of course they are raising the animals to order. You will need to buy in bulk but I think it works out rather cheaper because of course there's no middle man and not even a snazzy site - then again, with a bigger company, you may feel you have more protection. That's all I know about price because as I say I'm a veggie crank
Also on your big barn search do consider WI markets and farmers markets. If you drive I'm sure there will be a supplier more nearby, they just might be harder to track down. Down here there was a website called Taste of the SE so there might be something similar for your area with a different selection of suppliers. Also try the Wholesome Food Association.0 -
Can't you look on the Big Barn site at suppliers in somewhere like Manchester? Some of them will deliver in a 50 mile radius. farmshop.net is based in the east midlands, I haven't bought any meat off them but I've had the meat at the famers markets when they come to Leicester.0

hope one of these will be useful0 -
ive never found big barn that helpful a resource, as it only tends to list the expensive 'deli' type places near me. do companies pay to advertise on the site?
perhaps go out for a drive in the country, alot of farms are now selling direct to the public, as they have found they get a better price for their meat. New places are opening on a daily basis, so you might have missed some in your area.
i tend to find you get better info on forums for local places to buy good meat. i know my local farmer has built up a really good trade by word of mouth. namely me, in the school playground, telling everyone how lovely his meat is (ooh err), but most of the local mums had seen the signs for his shop, but were too set in their 'supermarket' ways to think about buying from him (ok the yard stinks of manure, but hey its a working farm, what do you expect). thankfully they are now fully converted. The quality/price just doesnt compare to the scrapings they were getting at Mr T and Sns

I buy my meat from a butcher -they sell loads of the stuff
Best to find a Q Guild Butcher, they will know all about their suppliers etc0 -
Your local butchers is usually the best bet, and if you make yourself friendly, and go regularly, you'll get the choice cuts from the back rather than the stuff that's been in the tray all day.
But ask where they get their meat from. Lots just buy wholesale, which is better than tesco's. But others buy direct off local farms/suppliers, and this stuff is the best. Low food miles too.0
