Sofa Covers & Summer Living Room

Hi, i have decided that my front room looks too 'winter' I have deep red sofas and thick curtains. I want to lighten things up a bit for the summer. I have cream walls so I can go for most colours.
I want to cover the sofa but don't want to use throws as they just fall off and get messy! I am thinking of making new covers, curtains and cushions.
Dose anyone have any ideas on how to make new sofa covers?
Thanks, Dawn

Loose covers are quite easy to make, particularly if you don't want them too tailored. If you make them fairly loose, you can usually tuck any excess fabric into the back and sides where the cushions meet the frame.
My own (pretty tiny) library has at least 4 books available with step-by-step instructions available, but if you want a basic idea you could click here as a reasonable place to start. This shows a chair, but a sofa's exactly the same, just a bit wider! HTH - I've always wanted to make my sitting room more summery in the summer, but seeing as it's all Victorian mahogany I don't think it would be that successful!0 -

How about lemon, white with a small floral pattern or pale blue? All would look nice with dark wood but may lighten it up a bit. With new curtains etc I'm sure you would make a huge difference. Dawn0 -
Use your exisiting covers as the plan for the new ones, take them off the sofa and measure the covers with nothing in them and make a pattern on tracing paper/newspaper or just pin them to the new fabric - might be worth making the first one (if they are all the same) in calico or someother cheap sheeting fabric so you can test it and then unpick it and use it as a pattern.....
Good luck - I'm making some for the sofa we have now, as it gets so grubby so easily!!!!0 -
Thanks, Dawn, you're right, it would. Unfortunately I failed to mention that my bay window is the size of a small country and it's replacing the curtains which prevents me from changing the room to suit the season. I just open the windows instead!!0

If you get into trouble, don't have the time, or are nervous about making a full set of loose covers then how about making covers for the loose seat pads and back rests. On most suites they are just a box shape. Pick a fabric that goes with the red covers already on but that lightens the look. It can also give a suite extra life as it's these seat areas that get dirty. For the curtains you could tack a sheer over the original curtains to give a lighter finish also. HTHLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

Hello i am hoping someone can offer a bit of advice,i am making new covers for the cushions on my sofa a hemingway the back rest cushions are attached with a zip (half on the cushion and the other half on the sofa frame) i was wanting to know are these special zips if so what are they called to look for some.Or are they normal zips split ? any help would be very gratefully received thanks Emma0

You can buy zipping on a roll, then the zip heads separately. If you have a local curtain maker or upholsterer it may be worth giving them a ring to see if you can buy a length off them. Or try good old eBay!0

I also want to make a cover for my sofa but the only problem I have is that the back of the sofa is narrower than the front. Is there like a site to make them for various shapes and sizes of sofa's?

Zips can be very expensive...but round where I live there are often old sofas thrown away, on skips, at the dump....usually its the frame or fabric or style that the problem, but the zips are in perfect condition and could be salvaged for free......0
