Carpet shampoo

Today I bought a Goblin vacuum cleaner that will wet wash carpets at a car boot sale. No instruction book with the cleaner, but think I have figured out how it works. Instead of using normal carpet shampoo can someone on here please tell me if and what they have used or suggest something that will work that is reasonably priced. I have looked in Argos and their carpet shampoo is priced from £9.99 to 14.99:eek:
Thanks

i use "stardrops", you can get this from any supermarket. It's about 60p for 500ml and works great.0

I forgot to mention, It's great to add a little Zoflora (the little bottles of concentrated disinfectant, about 50p) to your stardrops solution . It gives a fantastic fresh smell which lasts for ages. there's a range of frangrances to choose from.0

To get rid of stains/pet accidents/baby accidents mix up some Oxiclean and use that.

I bought some yesterday at my local supermarket (Morrisons). I would never have spotted it if I didn't know the name of the product as it was really hidden away on the the bottom shelf! So just wanted to say that thanks for the recommendation and will be trying it later today (if I get the energy)

Let us know how you get on with the carpet cleaner as I'm looking for one myself but don't know which one to buy. I've got my eye on the Henry type (think it's called George or Charlie or something) but it's £150 which is a lot of money to pay out, but it would probably cost me somewhere near that to have professional cleaners come in and do it.
Whatever was going through my landlords head when he carpeted the place with cream carpets I'll never know, and I didn't realise how grubby they were getting until I spot-cleaned a couple of marks the other day and it's left lighter patches "An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Be careful putting OxiClean in, if you have wool or wool mix carpets. It changes the colour - I know because when we moved in the other people had had a party just before they left and somone had knocked a glass of red wine all over the cream dining room carpet - right in the middle. In desperation, because it couldn't have made it any worse,I did try Oxiclean and the area the solution went on is now a more beige colour than the rest, but the red wine stain has diminished
You can pick up large tubs of carpet shampoo around the place, but I find the cheapo ones often don't smell as nice and if it's something that goes through your house, like your carpets, maybe you don't want it to smell like pine toilet cleaner. I like the smell of the Bissell one, but it's not cheap. Vax is OK too. And at least the commercial shampoos contain foam inhibitors, to stop your carpets trapping the foam and attracting the dirt back.0 -

This is what makes me reluctant to clean them myself as I used to have a vax years ago but I found once I'd cleaned them, they got dirty quicker and I had to do them every month after that, as the shampoo residue built up and attracted more dirt "An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"
