I put the sun tan oil wrapped in plastic bags on top of his clothes in his suitcase - naturally, I needed all mine for my clothes! - and one must have leaked!!!! There is a neat circle of oil right on the front of both legs of his best trousers. He refuses to wear them as they are as he says it looks as though he has wet himself! Apart from normal washing (twice), I also tried putting vinegar on (well, I thought it might just work), spraying with Shout, etc. I can't find any advice on any cleaning websites, they only seem to deal with engine oil, etc.

To get out greasy stains I use neat washing up liquid and then pop them straight in to the washing machine and wash them.
As if left I have found that it can take the colour out of things.
You might like to try it on a hem or something in case it does take the colour out.
I have done this on a navy peach fuzz top and it didn't seem to the take the colour out.

Did your normal washing (twice) routine include tumble drying too? If a stain is fixed (by heat) it makes it very difficult to remove but not impossible.
I would be tempted to try Ariel automatic as this removed used engine oil when I used to test stains in an R&D lab years ago.
You could try adding Ariel to a bowl/bucket of warm water and gently squeezing/rubbing the stained areas as a pre-treatment. Then leave the trousers to soak for 2 hours (with ocassional stirring) but don't add or top up with hot water. Then finally, put them through a wash cycle in your machine.
You could also contact the customer care help line for the laundry product you've used and ask for their advice to remove the stain.

You could try a little bit of Swarfega (degreasant for mechanics' hands) or a bit of white spirit. These are both 'kill or cure' however and should be used as a last ditch method.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0
