Chickens

Options
I read in a new kitchen garden magazine recently that keeping chickens is becoming quite chic, even in towns. But many people go for pedigree chickens that look fancy or have pretty coloured eggs. For money savers old style, chickens would probably be an added boon to resources, after all they lay every day in the summer (apparently) if content.

However, before dashing out to spend any of that hard earned cash on such fancy fowl, the same magazine also recommends rescuing a battery hen. What a splendid idea. Much less expensive and doing a good deed at the same time. They can't look very nice when first rescued, but a bit of TLC goes a long way very quickly, and an egg's an egg.

We won't be getting any chickens - we can't afford them for a start. But if we were, I think we'd certainly look at rescuing a battery hen. Must write to the magazine to tell us where to get more information.

I want to keep chickens, but our back garden is a jungle so they'd probably be eaten by the tigers.

We have ex battery hens, got them in May last year. The worst looking now is fully feathered and looks gorgeous. Although they were 'end of lay' when we got them, we have had eggs every day even through the winter.

They do need a bit more care than a younger hybrid or pure brees, for example they have to be perched at night. But they quickly adapt and, as well as moneysaving (50p a hen), they are very rewarding to rehome.

If you look up egg farms in the yellow pages and ask about 'spent hens' or 'end of lay' you should get a local supply. Just pick them up and bring them home - the 'farmer' will probably assume you're going to put them in a pot!

Try http://www.thehenshouse.co.uk - this is the woman that often appears in the papers/magazines (possibly the magazine you read) regarding rescuing battery hens.
