jelly recipes

Options
always on the look out for healthier sweets these days so today i made
some strawberry jelly (the 17p/box stuff from lidl) for part of the
water i used some tropical juice and i also added in some bananas

am i correct in thinking that kiwi's do something to jelly that
prevents it from setting? i was thinking that strawberry and kiwi
would be really nice but then remembered that so i added bananas
instead.

does anyone have any interesting jelly 'recipes'?

Not a dessert but I remember something with beetoot and apple. I think a red jelly was made with some vinegar :D and water and then poured over chopped beetroot and apple. When it set, it could be cut into clices and was served as a salad with cold meat.

I have heard kiwis stop jelly setting as does pineapple and papaya. I have never tried any of them just in case so can't say from experience.

What I can tell you from experience is that if you are going to make a lot of jelly, using more than one packet you must dissolve them together. For some reason if you mix two lots of jelly together that have been made separately, they turn back to water and you just get a sloppy mess.

save old cake to add to the bottom before the jelly. My mum used to put pineapple and cake in the bowl then jelly on the top.Put custard on the top to make a lovely trifle.

My mum used to sometimes add some tinned fruit cocktail to jelly and it always turned out ok. Think it was an idea from her slimming class at the time, cos you were allowed as much jelly as you liked and the fruit bulked it out.
