banana chutney

I found this site below completely by accident when trying to find a use for 12 bananas going black in my fruit bowl (my 20 month old son has decided he curently does not like them!) Low and behold I found a recipe for banana chutney (sounds quite foul but tastes rather nice...).

http://www.hookerycookery.com/banana20.htm

Banana Chutney

Description/Notes:

A very mild fruity chutney with just a hint of curry

Ingredients:

12 bananas

8 oz. (225g) stoned raisins

4 oz. (125g) currants

8 oz. (225g) sugar

2 oz. (50g) salt

half an ounce (12g) powdered cinnamon

1 oz. (25g) mild curry powder

1 pint (570ml) vinegar

Cooking Instructions:

Peel and slice the bananas, add them to the vinegar and boil until the consistency of porridge

Add the other fruit and spices and simmer for a further 15 minutes

Spoon into clean, warmed jars then seal and label

Just wondered if anyone else fancied trying it. I got my dad to taste it by calling it "curry" chutney. His face was a picture when I told him the "secret" ingredient...banana!

Let us know if you enjoy it as much as I do...

My Aunties recipe is a bit like that but you can use any fruit or vegetable!
    Auntie B's Any Fruit Chutney

3lb any fruit or veg (I have used apples, plums & tomatoes so far)
    3/4 - 1 pint vinegar
    1/2 lb chopped onions
1 tsp grated orange or lemon peel
1 dessertspoon each of: Ginger, Curry Powder & Mixed Spice
    1/4lb sultanas
    1lb sugar

Peel and chop fruit/vegetables and simmer in a preserving pan with the vinegar, chopped onions and grated lemon/orange peel stirring occasionally until fruit is tender. Add 1/4 lb sultanas and 1lb sugar and cook stirring occasionally until thick. Pour into hot jars - cover with waxed discs and seal down carefully.

Do any of these chutneys need boiling at specific temperatures, like jam/marmalade, or are they more straight forward than that?

That's what always puts me off making jam becuase of all the temperature business :o

No you just simmer and cook them until fruit is soft and the chutney thickens up. Like you I don't like making jams (unless it's easy peasy :D ) I can assure you that chutney is very easy to make. :)

Hi all, i make chutneys for xmas pressies, the 3 main things too remember are
    1) never put a lid on when cooking it
    2) you know when its done by getting a knife and making a line in the middle of mixture if the gap is not filled with vinegar for about 5 seconds its done, (if the line disappears within 5 seconds boil it longer).
    3) make sure your jars are sterilised properly
The best chutney i have ever made was one by Delia Smith called dowerhouse chutney I can post the recipe if anyone wants it. In fact i have made loads from different receipes and fould hers to be by far the best

  • My eldest loves this chutney and I lost the recipe, I have one or two for chutney!

My husband thought I was taking the proverbial when I told him where I found it!

I am a recent convert to money expert it has saved me several hundred pounds on car insurance in the last couple of months. So now I'm always looking for better deals.

Many thanks, happy chutney making and money saving!
