Sea fishing

This probably isn't the right place to ask, but anyway...
I know nothing about fishing but I like fish!
I wondered if anyone here knows about fishing from the beach: what I'd need, whether anyone's allowed to do it, if there's a right and wrong time of day and whether I'd be likely to catch anything edible. We love going to the beach and the kids can amuse themselves for hours there so I thought I may be able to use the time productively, thing is I've never seen anyone else doing it here (apart from with nets and that's not quite what I fancy!). I live in the north of scotland (Inverness).
I've got a feeling this is a bit of a stupid question from someone who clearly knows nothing - sorry. I know there are loads of lochs here but I'd need a permit for that? Hoping fishing from the beach isn't as complicated?

there is no such thing as a stupid question here!
i've been reading the river cottage cook book this morning and you can catch crayfish and eels in rivers. I don't know about sea fishing, but someone here is bound to know. Are there any shellfish or crabs there? mmm feel hungry now!

Some friends used to go sea-fishing regularly and they caught quite a variety of fish, including sea bass (yum!) but this was on the south-east coast and I've no idea what's available on Scottish shores.

I have collected various shell-fish like mussels and shrimp before now and cooked them and they were lovely being so fresh, but I've not done any proper fishing in a very long time.

Sarah's already mentioned the River Cottage book, and HFW has written a few now incuding the Meat Book, all of which are excellent value for money and contain a wealth of knowledge for using "free foods" available all over the country :)

  • HFW did catch mackerel from the beach with a rod in one episode of 'River Cottage Forever'. can't find anything on his website but this one explains how to: http://homepages.ed.ac.uk/evah01/lures.htm HTH

    Hello Kabie

I don't go sea fishing so I don't know much about the subject. I go coarse (lakes and rivers) fishing and you must have a rod licence. I believe that sea fishing doesn't need a licence.

My suggestion is to be brave and call in at an Angling Supplies shop. The staff will be very knowledgable and helpful. You can always claim that you're asking 'for a nephew';) if you're too embarrassed to ask for yourself.

Ask the staff for contact details of your local Sea Angling clubs. You can get lots of help and advice and still come away without spending anything if you like.....it's probably better to try the sport first before buying equipment you'll only use a couple of times if you don't like it.

If you decide to try beach fishing (rather than boat fishing), make sure that you don't get cut off by the tide coming in.......find out the tide times before you go. Also, make sure you tell someone where you will be, what time you will be home..........so that you'll be safe.

    Enjoy your fishing.

Thanks guys. I don't like molluscs: it's the texture which is a shame because there seem to be rather a lot of winkles etc.
Thanks Penny-Wise that link took me to an article all about "cheapskate fishing" : right up my alley. I going to see if I can work out what I need before the lidl specials are in and then work out of they have anything suitable.
I think as long as I don't go mad I'll get use out of the gear: my eldest fancies giving it a go and the husband will no doubt fancy trying to out do us.
I'm starting to worry that I'm having some sort of mid-life crisis though: I keep being drawn towards metal detectors and having previously thought they were pretty geeky fancy getting one myself: next stop cardigans and those two- foot slipper thingamys.
