Teddy smells

My teddy smells! I read the label, and it says "surface wash only" but I don't know what that means :o I asked my dad, and he laughed at me and told me not to be silly, so I thought I'd ask here!

And how do I dry him again without hurting him?

All my Teddys have gone in the washing machine and hung on the line. I would chance it on a gentle low temp wash.

My 32 year old ted called Fred also goes in the machine inside a pillow case on a low wash. I have never been able to put him on the washing line - popping pegs on him always seems a bit cruel :rotfl: I sit him on the radiator to dry. Although I suppose that could burn his bum a bit :D

I have picture of all my teddies that I have washed and hanging on the line. All by there ears. :D

I put them in the washing machine and like another poster said in a pillow case and they all came out fine. Even my 1st teddy who is old.

The only thing is that there filling does hold a lot of water. I kept going out and having to squeeze out there legs as the water was pooling in them.

    Yours

I suppose it depends on the teddy whether it would cope with the washing machine or not - I have never had any trouble either but just in case...

Surface washing is when you was the exterior only - i.e. no washing machine or soaking in the sink, just washing the teddy with a cloth and mild detergent.

If he isn't dirty as such would trying something like febreze that is supposed to eliminate odours help?

I think what they mean by surface wash is a rub over with a cloth dampened in a weak solution of washing detergent. You'll probably have to stick at it for 10 minutes or so to freshen him up. However, like the other posters all my soft toys have survived a whirl in the machine...and it does make them smell much nicer.

All of my childrens teddies and soft toy s go for a ride in "the Fair".

Or to put it another way they are made to feel very dizzy on a nice wool wash and spin, followed by a headbanging in the tumble dryer to fluff them up. Apart from mild concussion they seem to come out o.k, even the beanie babies, and my daughters soft toy shes had since she was born ( and still takes to bed 13 years later.) hope she doesn't read this.

I think you need to decide how precious he is to you. Don't forget that to kill dust mites you can put the soft toys in a bag in the freezer for a few hours to kill the mites. I also put the soft toyys in a bin bag wrap it around a hoover pipe to sel and give them a good hoover to remove dust.

So reading back on this post I must seem very cruel to all you teddy lovers out there:eek: My kids love me though:T

If he is clean but smelly (? does that make sense?) put him in a plastic bag with some bicarbonate of soda and give it a good shake to get into all the nooks and crannies - leave overnight and brush off next day.

The kids ones go in the machine when I can sneak them away, my mother actually took my sons away from him and put it in the machine in front of him one day, it took days for the hysteria to die down.

My teddy could never be washed anyway, he has a music box inside which would never "twinkle twinkle little star ever again if I dumped him in the machine :D
