knitting wool doorstep exchange scheme?

Hello to all,
I am crocheting a multicoloured squares blanket for my little boys bed ( it is of course a 'magic' blanket which hopefully will encourage him to stay in his own bed and stop him leaping into ours!
My problem is I am running out of wool in lots of different colours in double knit DK which I need, but have loads and loads of odd balls of 4ply, aran and chunky.
My Mum said when she was a little girl all the neighbours in her street used to swap wool with each other and it worked really well and saved lots of money. The problem is people dont really knit/crochet now as much as they did in the 40s - 60s. I am 32 and I don't know anyone who could swap wool with me.
Does anyone know of any scheme or club that does this? Or are there any knitters who are interested in swapping with me? If the same weight of wool was swapped, and posted in used carrier bags by second class post no one would be making a financial profit or be out of pocket....a bit like noel edmonds swap shop.
I have got some wool from charity shops but have avoided e-bay as I got some wool that reeked of fags and it has put me off!
I could e-mail pictues of my wool available for swapping to anyone who is interested.
sorry for the long post, any ideas greatly accepted!

Ask old ladies in charity shops. Lots of them knit, and Im sure they would share and swap wool.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Or put a sign in the newagents or newspaper or somewhere.
We had loads of wool after my Gran died (she made loads of crochet blankets to send here there and everywhere for charities) we really struggled to get rid of it until we found an advert in the paper for a lady making blankets for charity and asking for wool. We gave her enough to keep her going for years (we delivered it by the car load)(we did ask her if she wanted it all and made it clear how much there was)
Other relatives who are clearing out after older people have died or gone into a home (and can no longer knit) would probably be greatful to get rid of it for free. When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
Thanks for the tips....maybe I should ask in the hospice charity shops as when my gran died we gave alot of her bits and bobs to the hospice that had cared for her.0

have you thought about using two strands of 4ply together, they will knit up to dk, it will give you more use from the wool you have. If you want to pm me your address I can send you bits of wool, let me know what colours you are short of.
