Fabric softener warning

Recently it was suggested that you could make laundry smell fresh by diluting fabric softener and spraying it on. I'd urge caution, as I tried this on a couple of shirts and it's left faint spatters (like oil/grease stains) on the material which won't come off.
I used 50% water 50% concentrated softener - perhaps this was too much?

hi Austin,
I do this but only for linen and towels, and while they are still wet from coming out of the machine.
I usually dilute 75% water 25% unconcentrated fabric conditioner. Also, I use a non-coloured fabric softener.
Hope this helps.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
I use a few drops of essential oil in a spray bottle filled with water - so far have not had any problems and it is a lot cheaper than V******se :j"This site is addictive!"

I do the same as elona, but thanks for posting your experience AA as I'm sure there will be others who would benefit from the warning.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
