hi all,im an avid reader of your money saving tips and think that at the moment the only area we could cut down on cost is food.
The only problem is we are trying to eat really healthily to lose weight as well as general nutrition..we spend approx £80 pm just on fruit, salad and veg.Yet we do use the markets and local fruiterers rather than supermarkets.Plus probably another £50 on the rest.We are a family of two adults(one with an appetite for two!!)an 8yr old and 8month old.We don't buy any ready made sauces, only make own with herbs and passata(sieved toms)we only ever have turkey mince, chicken breasts and cheap bags of white fish fillets and tinned tuna.
Ive been reading through all your recipes and they sound great but seem to use any old ingredient thats cheap(no offence)
So i was wondering if you all might have a few ideas for me,as to how to make the fruit and veg bill cheaper and also any recipes that are very healthy but also cheap.
Many thanks to you all,and keep up the good work!

I have the same problem - not wanting to lose weight - but spending so much on fruit and veg. We're vegetarian so I reckon we can spend a bit more on cheese and veg tomake up for not buying meat and fish. I don't buy anything exotic like imported strawberries or processed like bagged salads but still spend loads. I'm growing lots of fruit and veg now so hopefully that will help in the long term.
It has to be the market if you're looking to cut costs. I always go for the cheapest option in greens (we eat a lot of kale!) and when there are no English apples around the kids eat carrots instead. Apples, oranges and bananas are the only regular fruit, everything else is a treat or bought when it's cheap.
Veg is easier because there's always something cheap - cabbage, parsnips, tomatoes depending onthe season. I have an organic veg box delivered, not moneysaving in itself but saves a supermarket/market visit.
So ... I don't really know the answer - apart from growing as much as you can. I've turned part of the garden into a veg plot with four 8'x4' beds but before that I always managed to grow tomatoes and cucumbers in pots and a couple of rows of runner beans in a corner.
I'm sure other people here will have lots of ideas for us both!0 -
I shiuld think its easy if you walk to the market and carry the shopping - cheap exercise and a free workout!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I couldn't remember how to spell facetious
Actually a lot of people have posted on here about how they have lost weight thanks to this forum. I've lost loads and am going to have to buy some new jeans soon and yet I am eating more and far better than I ever used to.
The trouble is that processed foods have loads of salt in them which aids water retention and prevents weight loss, when you are cooking all your own food then you don't use the same amounts of salt (if any) which helps greatly.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I work for Scottish Slimmers and they have a recipe book called "around a pound" - It has loads of meals in it which are cheap to make, but focus on healthy eating rather than dieting.

Since we started making our meals from scratch, lots of vegetables, slow cooker meals etc., my hubbie has lost over a stone in weight. I unfortunately have only lost 3 or 4 pounds.
Tonight he has decided to implement 'portion control'. I cook - he dishes it up. He has also decided to use smaller plates. I must admit, I'm not hungry (yet!) and we have plenty left over for another meal.
The problem with making meals from scratch is that they taste so good!Enjoying an MSE OS life0
