Cleaning/Waterproofing Walking Boots?

Any ideas for cleaning and waterproofing leather/Goretex lined walking boots? The Nikwax-type stuff is soooo expensive! Have tried using cheapo dubbin but it leaves me boots all icky and sticky and I do like to have a bit of a shine on them. Are there any 'old-fashioned' methods that are effective for someone who has a tendency to end up ankle-deep in water?

Have you got a local saddlery?
You can get some neatsfoot oil which will protect and waterproof leather, as well as soften it and keep it supple, but make sure you get pure oil as some have additives which eventually rot stitching.
Don't be tempted into buying more expensive "treatments/conditioners" as these are just neatsfoot oil with extra additives
Forgot to add ... you should be looking to pay no more than £3-£4 for 500ml and that will last ages as you only need apply a very small amount once a month or so."An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

If you still get wet feet after you've proofed your boots get some SealSkinz waterproof socks :j They're about £20 a pair but really work!
The inner is merino wool and they can be tumble dried on a low heat. We wear ours with white trainer liners inside and even after wading through peat bog for hours on end, our liners are still white and dry.
Best £20 I've spent recently!Just run, run and keep on running!0
