My husband filters out about one third of the water regularly and refills. I don't think you are supposed to completely empty the tank as the gravel builds up bacteria, which is beneficial for the fish.
Some fish (pleks) and orange apple snails are good algae cleaners. Also, some moss balls which I bought of Ebay.

thanks will empty a third out and see how we get on. we have kisser fish and some that suck the glass which helps kep it clean, but it smells a bit.0

A scraper wth a space for a razor blade, available from pet shops, makes cleaning the glass a cinch.Well worth the expense, especially when the tank is well established.0

I made the mistake of taking out the ceramic filters from our Biorb to clean and couldn't understand why the tank got cloudy so soon after cleaning it.
I didn't realise about the bacteria and only found out after we'd replaced just about everything you can! ::)
I suppose if i'd read the booklet instead of just ploughing in, I'd be better off today! ;D0 -
We have a 100l tropical tank, with a filter/pump in the water.
After messing about with buckets for a few weeks I have developed the following system, it seems to work okay for me.
I prepare a 25l water container this is about as big as i can easily lift up to pour in and cost £6.99 from the local camping shop.
I add a dollop of dechlorinating goop and leave it for 24 hours with a spare heater in it so that the water temperature is the same as that in the tank.
I have marked the side of the tank with the level to empty out to and hoover around the gravel with a gravel cleaner syphon until this mark is reached.
Finally I put a cereal bowl on the gravel and pour the prepared water back in onto it, this saves disturbing the gravel toomuch and doesnt leave the water too cloudy afterwards.
Hope this is of some use,
Regards,
