I use fabric freshener to perk up the curtains, rugs etc once a week but was wondering if anyone had anything else that tehy used as a cheap alternative? I was thinking of using diluted Fabric conditioner - what do you think?

Hello Dawn
Do you mean you spray your curtains/rugs with fabric conditioner or you are washing them in the machine using fabric conditioner?
If you are washing them in the machine and would like an alternative, replace with 1TBsp of white vinegar - if scent is important to you, you can add a drop of your favourite essential oil too.
If you really can't compromise on the scent of your fabric softener, then yes, dilute it~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Or, Dawn,do you mean a product like Febreze? I've never used it but my friend does because she and her husband both smoke. Think I'd rather wash the curtains and rugs and open the windows more often. Not sure what else would do but I imagine spraying fabric conditioner on every week would build up and make fabrics sticky/attract more dust. But I don't know, maybe that's what sprays like Febreze do anyway?????0

I've used the Asda own brand Febreze stuff and it seemed fine to me - they all smell a bit icky but it soon fades, and it did get rid of the original smell.0

I've been using my trusty 50% dilute vinegar spray instead of Febreze to get rid of the smell of pub from my jacket and to de-stink my shoes, it seems to work ok. The initial vinegar smell does linger for a bit though, so unlike Febreze you would need to leave things a while with a window open.
I'm slightly sceptical about Febreze anyway. I used it regularly on my curtains when I was a heavy smoker and it did eventually cause a sticky buildup.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
I make a spray from bicarb of soda and water and that seems to do the trick.0
