What spices can I put on my nuts???

It's not an embarassing herbal remedy type question (it'd need to be a good one seeing as I'm a girly, lol!)....!!

I've decided to do my dad some nuts/seeds in different seasonings for xmas - mostly to help him out as he's stopped smoking and is eating sweets like there's no tomorrow! I've started his collection already with pumpkin seeds (cheap at Holland and Barrett, buy one get one free) but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what seasonings might work best?

I've done it before toasting them in the oven with a bit if spray oil and salt, but I'm trying to think of something healthier than salt as he eats that by the shedload!

All suggestions very much welcomed, or if anyone can suggest anything interesting they've done with their nuts (ho hum :o ) I'd love to hear from you! :D

Thanks in advance

Lucy

I'm definitely having a go with this recipe. What would be the best way to store these and how long will they keep?

    Thanks.

The spanish fry almonds in olive oil and then drain and sprinkle with cayenne pepper and salt. Not exactly healthy but they do taste good!

  • This is a nibbles mix I found on an American site which is a bit like what you've been doing but might give you more inspriation for what to put in! :)

I make this every Christmas as it is makes terrific gifts. My children are always asking me to make them. Everyone comes back for more! It took many tries to get the recipe just right for us. Most have too much salt. Everyone agrees that this is the best!

**Please note that the amounts for a smaller version is in brackets.

1 medium box Cheerios (4 cups)
1 medium box Shreddies or Wheat Chex (5 cups)
1 medium box Rice Chex (4 cups)
2 lb. salted mixed nuts (1 1/2 cups)
1 large pkg. small salted pretzels (2 cups)
1 small box cheese stix (1 cup)
    FOR THE SEASONING:
    1 lb. margarine (1/2 lb.)
6 to 7 tbsp. worcestershire sauce (3 tbsp plus 1 tsp.)
    1 1/2 tbsp. garlic powder (2 tsp.)
    1 1/2 tbsp. onion powder (2 tsp.)
1/2 tbsp. celery salt (1 tsp.)
2 tbsp. seasoning salt (3 tsp.)

    Preheat oven to 250.

Mix the cereals, nuts, pretzels and cheese stix together in a very large bowl or pot.

Melt the margarine in a pot on fairly low heat. Add in the Worcestersire and seasonings and mix well.

Put about 1/2 the cereal mix in a large roasting pan and spread with half the sauce. Cover with the rest of the cereal mixture and then spread the rest of the sauce over. Mix well!

Put uncovered in the oven. STIR EVERY 15 MINUTES! Bake for at least 1 hour. Should be done but test for taste and crispiness. Will crispen even more when cold (if it hasn't been eaten by then).
