Here are some tips I recently picked up:
Brightener: Add lemon juice to the wash water
Whitener: Restore the colour to small items of yellowed linen by soaking in sour milk, then washing as usual.
Booster: Make whites whiter by soaking them in a mixture of one cup vinegar to 4 litres of warm water then wash as usual.
Fabric conditioner: Mix 1 cup each of washing soda, white vinegar and water. Stir in a few drops of essential oil such as lavender or lemon and store in a screw top bottle.
Fabric softener sheet: Use this homemade fabric softener sheet in the tumble dryer. Combine 1 part liquid fabric conditioner with 2 parts water in a plant mister. Spray an old flannel with the mixture and put it in the tumble dryer with your clothes. Respray the flannel for each batch of clothes.
Colour Booster: Reduce colour loss from black garments by pre-soaking them in a solution of 1 tblsp salt to every 1pint water before laundering.
