birthday cake

right then, here's one for the bakers....
sunday, as you know is, mothers day. rather expensive one this year, as not only are there two sets of mothers and grandmothers to make feel special, it is also my MIL's birthday!
she's decided that sshe is going to throw a tea party for family memebers on sunday night, so i thought as a nice surprise i would make her a cake.
question is what type?
first dilemma - one big one, or lots of little one arranged to spell 'happy birthday' or something like that?
second dilemma - if i do go for the big cake, what type of cake?
i was thinking along the lines of doing a chooccie sponge, topped with melted chocolate and maybe smarties, again spelling out happy birthday or something like that.
any suggestions on the above?
and if anyone could recommend some nice cake recipes, i'd be grateful

CHEAT!!!!!!
Betty Crocker's Devils Food Cake and a tub of the icing to go with it
Works out about four and a half quid but it's kinda 'homemade' and my other half says that it's the best cake he's ever tasted. (don't know what to make of that!)
Yes it's mega expensive compared to proper homemade but it's quick, foolproof and delish.
Use a potato peeler to shave some white chocolate into curls and you have a cake that's SOOOPER LUXURY!!!Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
Go on www.recipezaar.com and look up pound cake, its a great cake and you can't overcook it! then look up luscious lemon frosting (flavoured with orange peel!) then get some lovely little white and yellow sugar flowers from tesco!
Ice the middle of the cake and ice the top arrange the flowers (suitable for mothers day, birthdays and christenings!!).
Don't forget to use your tokens and tesco!0 -
im intrigued by the poundcake idea, will definately give it a try at sometime.
on the birthday front, having a nosy across recipe sites, i stumbled across the idea of a marble cake.
thought i could do that for the base perhaps, and pinch the potato peeler/chocolate idea (i've always used a grater in the past).
like the idea of the flowers, sounds pretty and girly. shall keep an eye out for them in the cake isle of asdasknow thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Pound cake is brilliant - its great for shaped cakes like those football ones. Its quite like madeira but better. Good luck!0
