Birthday Party

My six year old is nearly seven! Anyone got any tips on a virtually free birthday "celebration" idea. Can't afford any parties at play areas/ McDonalds etc and wouldn't want to frankly. Doing it at home can work out expensive if you're not careful too though.
I did think about a afternoon tea party, so all the little girls get dressed up in their best outfits and are served little triangle sandwhiches and french fancies on borrowed china, keeping the number to under 10 guests.
But what about party bags?
And games?
And of course, anyone got any great ideas for a very cheap birthday pressie for my daughter? She asked for a bike!!! Cannot get that so it has to be something that is good value, will last and isn't junk. She is extremely creative both with her hands and imagination. It really does have to cost less than £10.
Thanks everyone for great tips on this brilliant part of the site.

Look on the marriage & family site, there is a thread for kids parties that I've been getting ideas from for my son's (soon to be 6). We can't afford an expensive party this year so we are having a good old fashioned party with silly games. I'm not going to go mad with food and we are making his cake ourselves. As for party bags most kids just want sweets, Poundland and Asda are great for these and also prizes for games. I think a dressing up tea party is a great idea for girls and I'll remember that for my daughter.0

I'm sure I've recently read threads with cheap offers on the type of things you might be looking for ... Woolies Pick n Mix offer was one and there was an online store selling stocking filler type toys very cheaply but I'm afraid I can't remember what it was called now. Maybe someone else can remember, or try a search in the Grabbit forum as I'm sure they would have been in there.
Good luck with the party!... (so glad my kids are all grown up now

When I was broke I dreaded my son's parties - one year I was so broke I did a pizza party, did the dough myself, let all the kids knead their own and put their own toppings on (which I prepared before they got there from stuff I had in the fridge and some special offers at Morrisons) and cooked them while they wore themselves out doing Musical Chairs. For afters I did Traffic Light Jellies (red, yellow and Green jellies set on top of each other in a big glass bowl) - they loved it. I even had other mums ringing up asking where I bought the Pizza party kit and jelly from!!!! Another year I did a barbecue (burgers in buns or hot dogs in rolls and oven chips) I got away with that as his birthday is in June - it is a bit extreme to do one in February!
BUT if we get the snow we are told is coming, you could do a ski-themed party - wear them out building snowmen, snowball fights, etc, serve warm ribena/fruit squash with a ladle like mulled wine or punch (chop some fruit in it) and make some soup or a stew and fresh baked crusty bread for their meal with a hot suet syrup pudding and custard for afters!!!! I defy any kid not to enjoy that!
Goody bags - Do you have any of those "pound shops" near you? They do good enough packs of stuff for a quid each, like gel pens, hair slides (for girls) felt pens, note books, and also Netto/Aldi/Lidl for multi packs of little bags of Haribo-type sweets.

The food kids want is cheap anyway. My standard birthday party menu is jam sandwiches, cheese sandwiches, jaffa cakes from the pound shop, carrot sticks, buns from the pound shop or homemade ones, sweets and maybe some grapes. Cheap pop like tesco value cola and lemonade.
I've had kids come to my house who have themselves had expensive parties - bouncy castles and all, and they enjoy the traditional stuff more.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

My daughter had a very cheap 9th birthday party (maybe too grown up for younger ones but may be of use to someone). She had 6 fiends (I mean friends, no I was right the first time!!) for a movie night and a sleepover. Pizzas and popcorn and a couple of dvds. They all had a great time.0

Hi, just a thought but we have so far got all my dds bikes from the recycling part at the tip. They often have some good bikes - all for less than £6 and you just collect them so no delivery or postage. My dd has her birthday in a couple of weeks and I am thinking of a princess party - all invited to wear favourite dressing up girly clothes and princess themed games, simple party food but haven't thought about party bag yet.0

What about a Bratz party. They all come dressed as their favourite Bratz doll. Have mid afternoon and all you need are some crisps and squash to drink. Few CDs for a mini disco and you could play musical bumps etc. Tell them you will take a picture and send it into the Bratz magazine.
For a pressie you can get something Bratz
toysrus bratz
Boots & Woolies did have bratz jigsaws which were only £2.99 each. Also Wilkinson had a funky fairy writing pad for 99p that folds up into its own envelope - this was my daughter's stocking for Xmas and is played with more than the expensive pop idol head mike
Instead of party bags you could just blow up a balloon each and attach a small bag of sweets to the balloon string for them to go home with.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
