Does anyone have a good source of family/frugal recipes that are suitable for cooking in this country?

I'm asking this because I have a ham shank (bargain) and no idea what to do with the thing! I don't have time to faff about tonight so I'll bung it in the freezer till I can find a suitable recipe.

I was hoping to roast it for a hot meal, then use the bone and leftovers to make soup or casserole. I can't find any recipes for roasting this cut.

I've tried Delia, and Google, but mostly I find recipes with an American slant. I don't want to drench the thing in honey/syrup/treacle, I just want a roast dindins!

I've got puy lentils, yellow split peas, barley, lots of herbs and spices, and of course I can go out and buy fresh veggies to go with it. Any ideas?

Nigella does a fantastic ham roast in Coca Cola. Think the recipe is on the channel 4 site

And the US version

Bake a moist ham. Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

Thanks for the tips - eventually I decided to boil it, and served it with leek sauce. Yum

The bone is now simmering for stock to make soup out of the leftovers, so that's three meals out of £2 worth of ham shank. Bargain!

My mum back in the 'good old days',when we were poor :-/

Used to put it in the pot and just keep adding stuff..............started off like stew and ended up as broth.......tasted a bit differant each day but it was looooooovely ;D

I know this is resurrecting an old thread, a very old thread at that! I'm also aware that the original query was with regard to ham but also in connection with budget meals. A uk based site was requested.
I've recently just come across it (even though I'm a bloke and not a parent) as I was looking for a receipe for Tuna/Pasta bake to use up left overs.
The site is called www.netmums.com and is well worth checking out. It's got various categories of recepies including budget. They seem to be relatively straight forward as well. Hope this helps.
