How to Pay My Tax Bill?

I know I must be missing something really obvious, but I don't know how to go about paying my self-assessment tax bill by internet banking.

I can tell from my online account how much I need to pay, but there are two options for account numbers to use. One is Cumbernauld and one is Shipley. The Help function says my payment reminder should tell me which to use, but surely by the time my reminder arrives, my payment is late? Anything else I have ever received from HMRC suggests my tax office is in Cardiff.

I am trying to avoid phoning them, but I will if I have to. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks

Phone them they wont bite and you will get the exact answer you need rather than a guess from someone here.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • Not scared of them (they have been very helpful in the past) - I just have an ever growing list of personal admin phone calls to make this week.

Thought someone may know where I can look it up or find out, but I'll phone if necessary. Would have done it tonight if it wasn't Sunday!

It doesn't matter which you pay to ...... the SA system straddles both Accounts Offices. Just ensure that you put your UTR (10 numerics + the letter 'K') into the reference field as well. But opt for Shipley if you're d/w by Cardiff (Govt Depts?) ... as they d/w South East / South West / Wales / London & NI.

An option is to pay via your Debit Card if you remain uncertain ... you don't have to register and then just need the UTR.

HMRC has totally changed..it has become like any other business..call centres etc.. you wont really have a 'my tax office' as matter of course..people paying different taxes are dealt with different parts of the country.. bit of a shame really cos I think people liked dealing with their 'local tax office' so at the end of the day..phone either Cumbernauld or Shipley..they will both take your payment..
