Sofa with DFS - Finance with GE Money HELP PLEASE!!
Hi, I'm in desperate need of some advice.
My girlfriend and I bought a sofa from DFS in May 2008, it was just over £1000 and opted to pay for it interest free over 2 years with the first payment a year later in May 2009. On our agreement this is agreed.
Anyhow, it is now November 2009 and my girlfriend noticed that they repayments of around £40 have not been taken. Our agreement has her old address on it with an old mobile number for contact (which makes me feel that they may have tried to contact).
The main issue is that we have looked on her credit report with Experian just out of curiosity as we are looking for a mortgage soon and we have defaulted on the account with GE Money. It has made her credit report poor and she is very upset.
DFS informed us that there would be no need to worry as the money would just come out as of 5th May 2009 and it didn't.
Advice needed is what to do next and is it possible to get this default off of the account.
Your advice is greatly needed.

The problem is you've been £40 a month better off for 5 months and haven't wondered why.
You need to talk to GE Money and find out why the DD didn't happen..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
We have 8 direct debits coming out since we moved in together from May 2008 and to be honest it slipped our minds a whole year later.
We are not sure why the direct debit didn't happen and quite p*ssed off as the chap at DFS assured us this and that.
The main points we need to find out are can we get this default removed from the credit report, we have no problem paying the outstanding money we just want it sorted.0 -
The DFS chaps are salesmen and happy to assure customers of many things they don't have complete knowledge of. Discuss with GE in the first instance and see what they can do, at the moment it looks like the default is a valid one..................

But what I'm asking is there anyway possible of getting the default removed from the account?
Technically I know the default looks like a valid one but we have the money to pay it and want to clear the arrears.0 -
No I doubt there is, once you have paid the arrears off the default will be marked as satisfied on your credit file but will still remain on there for 6 yearsAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00

Where there's a will, there's a way.
I would start with the polite route and just speak to someone and stress how none of this is your fault: you set-up a direct debit and they failed to take it, so how is it fair that they've defaulted you?
The fact you didn't keep them updated with your address details is a fair point, but not really relevant here as it's their failure to process the DD which has caused the loss.
Try the polite route to start with and then review their response.
All sorts of options open at this stage.0 -
Thanks for the feedback and advice.
You make a point about not updating them with the correct address but they HAVE our new address but processed everything through the old address. They actually had my girlfriends last THREE address including her parents address in which they still live there.0
