Paragon Finance
I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction. 22 years ago my parents took out a personal loan for £5000. they paid the full payments for two and half years and were then informed that the debt had been sold to another company and it was then sold to a third company - Paragon. At about that time my younger brother died and my parents were obviously in a mess. A representative from the company came out to the house and spoke to my mother who had not paid the monthy bill. the situation was explained to him and he then called his office and told them the situation and also informed them not to phone my parents. He also arranged for reduced payments at that time to be made. It is now 22 years later and whilst I was going through my parents papers with my mother i noted that she was still paying a direct debit to them. I have checked her records and she has being paying the sum every month since the visit by direct debit and has never missed a payment after that visit.
I have worked out that on a £5000 loan she has now paid a total of £28000. She had not received any paperwork from Paragon in the 20 odd years. I asked her to contact Paragon to cancel her direct debit as to my mind she had more than adequately paid the debt. They then set her the first statement in 20 years which says a settlement figure of £8000 would be needed to pay this debt in October. According to this statement they have been charging her interest every month and the revised repayment which she has never missed does not cover the interest charged each month
I have spoken to the government deby financial line to ask their advice and they were going to send me some forms and templates to use to contact Paragon but as yet 9 weeks later I have not received anything.#
Can anyone advise of a website where I may find the necessary paperwork so that I can tackle Paragon myself on behalf of my parents
any advice would be appreciated

Sally,
It all depends on the credit agreement and interest rate. I think Paragon would find it both difficult to find the loan agreement and difficult to defend how a 22 year old loan for £5k after paying £28,000 in interest and charged could still have a balance of £8k.
I suggest you write a letter of complaint to them asking them to investigate, to provide a full statement for the last 22 years and a copy of the credit agreement and asking them to justify why the account shouldn't be written off.
You then set the clock running to refer it to the financial ombudsman for investigation if you don't get a satisfactory response from paragon.
Good luck.
