need info on colleges in Glasgow

hi there.

My daughter is nearly 17 and moved to glasgow to live with her boyfriend, as she has only GCSE's and the job from is a little dire at the moment I'm trying to get hold of information about colleges around her area of glasgow. She lives in the Maryhill part so im hoping for information from MSE members who might know the area or who are knowledgable about further education in Scotland.

With the college year beginning in August she could not carry on her child care course that she had started here in England, as there wasnt the same course available there and the courses were a little far on for her to enroll and catch up. If she has not got a job in the summer then we will think about getting her on a course in August, but ideally she would like to get college course as now if possible.

Really what im wanting is addresses of further education services, or some college within a sensible distance of Maryhill.

Can anyone offer any advise, maybe there are courses that are enrolling now, wether they are part time or full time. At this stage we are not looking for anything specific, possible Hair and beauty, or a child care course, hotel and tourism, of even a catering course, something to get her back in education while the job front is how it is.

Cheers

Stow College has a campus in Hotspur Street, Maryhill.

They tend to do performing arts type courses at the Maryhill campus, the technical courses are at the Cowcaddens college.

Whilst I'm all for people being in education, there's not much point doing a vocational course if she doesn't want to work in these jobs and you've listed four career areas, most of which are totally different!

I'd suggest she makes an appointment to see a Careers Adviser with Careers Scotland to discuss her plans and s/he'll also be able to give her information on colleges and availability of courses. These decisions are too important to be approached in such a haphazard fashion!

Careers Scotland sound what we may be looking for, further details please on how to seek help from them

  • that's the address, sorry I don't know how to post links
  • If she has no job and nothing else to do between now and August then how bout you suggest she takes part in the Prince's Trust 12 week team programme www.princes-trust.org.uk.

It prepares young people for work/education/training and you gain so much from it. Plus she will get paid £50/week for taking part. She would do team-building, residential week with outdoor activities, community projects, work experience, fundraising, gain qualifications like first aid, practice CV's/job applications and interviews.

Plus she will make friends, which if she only has her boyfriend in the area may be useful.

Maryhill is quite central with transport links to all the main colleges in Glasgow - so she could easily get to the Central colleges (they've changed names and I'm not up to date with them) or even out to Langside on the south side of the town.

Careers Scotland is a good idea - and the Princes Trust, or any of the other voluntary organisations would be a good way to gain experience.

Having said that, if she is looking for entry level catering work, it shouldn't be too hard to find something in Glasgow, particularly in the West End. Care jobs tend to prefer someone a bit older.

Hope she enjoys it. I was a student in Glasgow and loved it.
