The messages are sent out via the British Telecom satellite transmission station at Goonhilly in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The receiver of your message (be it your kids, your partner or whoever) will then receive a Certificate of Transmission by post which includes your message and a personal tracking number that allows them to track the journey of their message through outer-space. You can also receive e-mail updates to find-out when your message passes key milestones (say, Saturn, Mars or when it leaves the Milky way) if you want.
