Where do i start?

We are £50k in debt & don't even have a mortgage! I 'look after' all the finances so my husband thinks we only owe around 20k. Debt in a mixture of my name & hubbies. Have got to the point where I have exhausted all present lines of credit & am up to overdraft limit! Have not missed any repayments but could do with not having any other expenses but with 2 children this is not going to happen.

I work & get £560 per month but pay out child care of £380. This will stop in July however. Husband earns £17k per year in agriculture so much of it is overtime in summer - at this time of year only brings home £211 per week. We get our tax credits & help with childcare.

I feel so ashamed & guilty, getting little or no sleep. Please help.

    Hi
Can't really offer any advice, but sure someone else can. I've just posted for the first time today too and just wanted to say that I understand the being scared bit.

Our debt has built up over the years and to be honest now we try not to overspend, most of our spending is on children too and on our business.
Our business is quite young so we've not really started to make any money on it yet and we are living off an overdraft most of the time just to pay our monthly bills.

My partner works virtually 24 hours a day at the moment, a few days over the last few weeks, he's not came home at all. Most nights he comes in about 3am, then goes back again around 9am. I am a partner in the business but am a full time mum really at the moment. 7 months pregnant with our 3rd child.
We get help now with tax credits but only just recently as they still had my partner down as working full time with his previous employer, so the backdated payments were a great help, but have now gone.

Our worst things are our credit cards and a loan. We do have a mortgage, but luckily we manage to pay that ok.
I'm going to try to do an SOA as advised on here, so maybe you need to do that too, then see where to go from there.

    Good luck
    Yvonne

    Hi
Welcome to the site...no one will be judgemental here ...people are only here to support or help

we need more detailed information before we can help ...can you post a Statement of Affairs in the following format

However, it late so most people wont reply until tomorrow.

If you browse the bulletin board you will see examples but the general format is

    : statement of income:

    : statement of expenditure
this should be quite detailed but excluding debt repayment
: a subtotal to save us all having to add it up

: statement of all debts including
outstanding amount, monthly repayment , APR
a subtotal of the total debt and of the total repayments, to save us having to add it up

also add a brief details of you situation, partner, any children, rent or own property, value of house and mortgage, any special circumstances that are relevant
  • ...and most importantly, don't panic. There's a good bunch of people on here who will want to help.

The information you'll get from this board is like gold-dust. You've made the first step by coming here. No-one will judge you. You'll be surprised at how many people are in the same boat as you.

    Best wishes

:A Please - Dont panic. I was in similar situation only a year ago. I had to come clean after my husband got to the mail first one morning and spotted something wrong. I cant help you with advice about the money but dont let yourself become ill over this. It does not help in the end. I joined this to find the answers so maybe you will too. Perhaps you should just tell your husband. There never is a good time but he will find out soon so bite the bullet and remember, it is not all your fault. Why is he not helping with the family finances anyway? I did it for 39 years and it got me nowhere. Share the load.

Hello again. How are you today? Hope you have heard something you can use. Stay calm - I know thats easy to say but try.
Just wanted to say I have won one small battle this morning against a big catalogue company in Manchester (the Big One) They have written off my small debt (£140) to them after weeks of my complaining about the harrassing, threatening, intimidating telephone calls made by members of their staff when I was late with 3 payments. They ignored my requests to not to call but all to no avail. Never answered my letters. I wrote to the MD in the end but I did find that I had NO protection from any organisation such as the FSA, Financial and Leasing or the Ombusdsman. Perhaps someone will tell me who does protect us against these companies who harass us, sometimes for only peanuts and how to deal with them?
  • Just wanted to say a big thankyou to all those who replied! Although I've not done anything else at the moment other than share my situation with you I do feel ever so slightly better. Will post a Statement of Affairs asap.
Have even (almost) decided to contact CCCS os similar.
