Amazon - no longer have 30 day price promise

I recently purchased a TV from Amazon (2 weeks ago). When I noticed that the price had dropped yesterday, I followed advice from a previous Martin's Money tips email to contact Amazon and ask them to refund the difference under their price promise. A direct quote from their reply to me:-

Please note that only orders placed on or before September 1, 2008 were eligible for a price difference refund under the Post-Order Price Guarantee policy. However, we do continue to offer our Pre-order price guarantee.

I wont be making any further large item purchases from them and would suggest that anyone thinking of doing so considers their new lack of price promise before doing so.

It sounds like you were reading an old email. As with any information given on MSE, you need to check that it is still correct/ applicable before entering into a financial agreement.

Amazon was one of very few retailers that offered such a price promise. If their price is still competitive at the time of purchase, I see no reason why they should not be used?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Thanks for the reply DMG24.

I would point out that I didn't enter in to the contract/purchase on the strength of an old MSE message. I did so because the price was reasonable. It was only on seeing it at a cheaper price 2 weeks later that I cast my mind back to the old MSE information and thought I would take it up with Amazon. I may be wrong, but I don't remember seeing any recent updated information that their price promise ended on 1.9.08, in which case I consider my thread to be of relevant information for other viewers which they might like to consider when using Amazon.

I agree that the 30 day price promise was indeed a good one, but other retailers do give price promises - Currys give a 7 day price promise and I belive PC World do as well. In fact, when I made a purchase from Currys a few months ago and the price dropped 3 weeks later, the manager used his discretion and refunded the difference to me anyway even though it was outside their 7 day promise. I believe that it is in the spirit of the forum to get the best deals possible from retailers and take full advantage of any deals or offers they give. If those offers are withdrawn or no longer applicable I think it is also relevant and useful to say so.

As a post Script. Amazon have just emailed me and said that as the price drop was significant, and under the circustances, they will give me a one off refund of the difference even though it is now against their standard policy.

I hope this will prove helpful and informative to other forum members.

There is a thread HERE, started on 1st September, with the last post being 17th September, that mentions this price promise withdrawal, in particular post #5

  • Distance selling regulations 2000 would've kicked in allowing you to return your tv within 7 days.

I would've mentioned this to Amazon and ask if they would like me to return it and re order it at the lower price. Someone on HUKD did this and got the price reduction successfully. You are probably too late now, but bare this in future for any other internet / phone sales you make.

The PC World and Curry Price Promises are pretty weak. The displayed advertising states that they will match physical stores within x miles radius. Yet we all know that there is another price promise that matches most internet companies like eBuyer and Amazon that you have to state yourself. Also the DSG Group get manufacturers to supply goods to them with slightly difference model numbers and they use this as a get out even though the product is identical - ie HP 2511 laptop, but PC World will have a HP 2511EA.

  • The PC World and Currys price promise I was referring to was matching their own price reductions - not prices from other retailers. EG - If you buy TV from Currys for £500 and then they reduce the price to £450 within a week of your purchase, then they would refund the difference. They wont however necessarily price match other retailers - that's not what I was on about. In my case I purchased a surround sound system which Currys then reduced in price by £70 three weeks later - outside their price promise of 7 days, but I spoke nicely to the manager and he refunded the difference anyway.

I think that more and more, as a consumer, we have to push for the best deals and negotiate where possible.
