Sadly many are forced into paying shops' overinflated pre-Christmas savings. There is one way to avoid this. If you're looking to buy something big - TV, games console, new bed, something expensive - the price will drop quicker than an X-factor winner's chart position after Christmas. So why not make a voucher that promises the gift at Christmas, but actually wait till the sales to buy it meaning more cash for you, and a better new year?

Why not print your own vouchers using this free site: https://www.fun-vouchers.co.uk with your own personalised message.

Its a great idea :) I have done this in the past with different presents - I have done it even when its just been giving my mum money to get herself some clothes in the sales - she appreciates it as she can get more for the money :)

Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

Of course, the ultimate MSE will plan their children to be born in January so all their presents can be bought in the sale...
  • Or we could lobby to have Christmas day moved to the end of January. That way we could take advantage of the sales in time for Xmas!

Would make no difference in our house as I buy through out the year. Buying in the sales and picking freebies etc.

So christmas never costs that much. Excluding the £40 in cheques that need to be written for the step children.

We have spent £58 on 11 people. And everyone is getting at least 2 presents if not more.

I costed what it would have cost if I had paid full price and not had Bogofs, extra boots points for buying etc. Over £160.

For each other me and my husband never spend more £10 anyway.

But then I suppose are big present which is for the house and is a chest freezer in the sales.

But for people who do spend a lot then yes it is a good idea.

    Yours

  • This is how my parents, my dad in particular, have done it for the past 30 years of my life. It makes for better presents for you as a child as you get to choose the particular item!

It works well and gives great opportunities for novel clue type presents. One year I found under the tree a tiny cylinder as my main present! I wasn't best pleased as my sister had a huge box. Then when I opened it it turned out to be a film container with a voucher in it that said, "this card will buy you the camera of your choice after Christmas." Much more fun than finding a camera under the tree!!

My son's 10th birthday is on 28th Dec (feast or famine with gifts for him every year!) and we've promised him a new bike this time round. I told him that if he wanted it on the day I'd have to order it before Christmas, when everyone and their dog wants bikes, but if he was prepared to wait about two weeks we'd probably get it much cheaper.

The clincher for him was that he gets 50% of whatever we save. He's really enjoyed shopping around over the last few weeks and we've picked out three possible models at three different shops. We'll revisit again in the New Year and take the best bargain we can find.

Now, he's thinking like a moneysaver already.
